India's Intolerance - What Obama said EXACTLY
...Obama talks about the great value of religion and then notes its downside: "But we also see faith being twisted and distorted, used as a wedge -- or, worse, sometimes used as a weapon. From a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris, we have seen violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess to stand up for faith, their faith, professed to stand up for Islam, but, in fact, are betraying it." Cue references to ISIL and then "sectarian war in Syria, the murder of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria, religious war in the Central African Republic, a rising tide of anti-Semitism and hate crimes in Europe."
Obama then notes that people of faith continually grapple with the good and the bad of religion, which is where India enters the picture… right after America herself Humanity has been grappling with these questions throughout human history. And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ. Michelle and I returned from India -- an incredible, beautiful country, full of magnificent diversity -- but a place where, in past years, religious faiths of all types have, on occasion, been targeted by other peoples of faith, simply due to their heritage and their beliefs -- acts of intolerance that would have shocked Gandhiji, the person who helped to liberate that nation.
So this is not unique to one group or one religion. There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency that can pervert and distort our faith.
That's it. The two lines that have stirred the pot of vitriol, outrage and malice.

Modi and BJP spokespersons are taking it the right way. India should not be offended by what Obama said. In fact, the crazies in BJP (Sakshi Maharaj, etc.) should be told to stop talking rubbish; they give a chance to CON desh-drohis to make India look like a terrible place. In reality, CONartists are the ones who create differences between communities just to get votes in India.

Looks like Obama's two lines have sharply pricked the intolerant, vitriolic NRI Patriots who cheerlead the intolerance he spoke about. Look at the limpwristed, butt-hurt lot scrambling hither-thither to come up with some shaky explanations to reduce the sting from that public scolding!

Yeah. Strong-minded Sikularists like you, CONartists, Laloo, Nitish, Manjhi and Mulayam will rejoice (self-deprecate)!
Just imagine what Obama or Bush was saying when bin Lavden and Arafart were criticizing the US on its middle-East policy.

You are extremely brilliant. You "linearly" disconnected the two statements and gave a Sikular twist to what I wrote.

Re: India's Intolerance - What Obama said EXACTLY
The moot point here is not America’s wrong deeds, but the wrongs happening in our own country. If we love India, and all of us do, we must introspect over the growing religious intolerance in our society. The responsibility of introspection falls primarily on Modi and his party. To be fair to him, he has not uttered anything objectionable on religion-related matters since becoming PM in May 2014. Indeed, in his Independence Day address, he wisely appealed to the people to “put a moratorium for 10 years” on communalism and casteism. Yet, he has not deemed it necessary to publicly rebuke communal voices in the Sangh Parivar, of which his own party continues to be a member. It is not enough for him to convey, behind closed doors, his displeasure over the “ghar wapsi” campaign launched by VHP functionaries, which was endorsed by none other than Mohan Bhagwat, the RSS chief. As PM, it is his duty to let the nation know that both conversions and reconversions which use fraudulent means and spread bigotry are illegal, unacceptable and heavily punishable. He must also announce a zero-tolerance approach to attacks on churches.
Many sensible leaders in the BJP abhor the utterances and activities of the extremists in their parivar. However, they are loath to recognise that the ideological roots of Hindu intolerance lie in the parivar’s pet concept of “Hindu rashtra”, which violates the letter and spirit of the Indian Constitution and has given rise to understandable concern and ire among non-Hindus. BJP leaders’ inability and unwillingness to confront the core of the RSS ideology is the cause of their split personality. Take Modi’s own example. He has surprised his critics as well as his supporters by repeatedly invoking the name of Mahatma Gandhi, even making him the icon of his flagship Swachh Bharat mission. Yet, neither he nor any of his colleagues in the party or the government has publicly praised Gandhiji’s lifelong mission for communal harmony, for which he sacrificed his life. Perversely, some BJP supporters have been emboldened to eulogise Godse.
This requires Modi to act boldly. He may have been an RSS pracharak in the past. But today he is India’s prime minister, who has the constitutional duty to disown a Hindu rashtra and defend secularism
Obama has provoked Indians to do soul searching. Let’s ponder over his message and not shoot the messenger.

Indian people spoke in a democratic election. Obama has not much of a role in this discussion. He is just satisfying himself and some other of us supporters and Indian American supporters. Indian psuedos are delirious about a statement that has no practical utility.

This is not about election rather about egregious acts that took place since honorable PM took office.truthbetold wrote:Indian people spoke in a democratic election.
