looking for shangri-la
i just watched this doucmentary that took my breath away. this australian man longs to find shangri-la which he has read about in a book called "the lost horizon" by some hilton.
he starts off at peshawar in northern pakistan and it's an interesting area: it consists of the mountains in the hindu kush surrounded by china, afghanistan and india. they take you through the city of peshawar (he stops at a bookstore) and to the nanga parbat and the indus river. everything is so pristine, untouched, even sacred. we see some of the hill tribes living alongst these areas, the kalash, and he goes on to a place called chitral and the swat valley. as you can imagine this area was once where buddhism was widespread and you see relics of it.
some things that struck me: the muslims must have had much fervor to impose their religion in the ends of the world, this matched only by cricket! the people there are excellent horsemen. have any of you watched the hinsi movie, khuda gawah? there's a scene where all these warriors riding horses try to capture the corpse of a dead animal. well, that's actually a sport in these part. and then believe it or not, the villagers here play polo which was introduced to them from persia.
oh and then he makes it to the swat valley and kashmir and i don't want to spoil any of it for you. but if you want to get away for a little bit of time and feast your eyes on some natural beauty then you may want to watch it. once i started i couldn't stop. and the host is very handsome and fit and it looks like he did this entire search in his dockers!
