Mughal Emperor Akbar banned cow slaughter and consumption of beef in his kingdom. However, he allowed pig slaughter and pork consumption and in fact he is recorded as saying in the Ain-i-Akbari that it is quite all right to eat pork. This shows Akbar's attempt to woo the hindus in his kingdom. There are numerous examples illustrating Akbar's attempts to woo the hindus like his appearing in public with a tilak or tika (hindu religious mark) on his forehead. It is unfortunate that despite this the Hindutvas/Chaddis try to carry out a character assassination of this great king portraying him to be anti-hindu.

Of course, in the 16th century, Akbar would probably not have known that beef was being eaten by hindus in Vedic and Upanisadic times and even later. Akbar probably thought that hindus worshipped the cow from time immemorial.
