New chat application

I have set up a new chat application that is now ready to test. The features it offers are:

Ability to ignore posters
Ability to send private messages / have private chats
Ability to create separate channels and invite others to those channels
Short archive -- you only see the last 10 lines of messages before your login
Ability to post images and links in chat
Ability to delete your own messages
Sound alerts, blinking titles when new messages are posted (can be turned off if you don't like them)

Unfortunately, this chat does not integrate with Forumotion. So I set it up at http://ch.chaikaapi.com/chat. You can access it by clicking the link "SuCHat" above on any page of this forum (just under the Coffeehouse logo, fourth item after "Home"). The first time you go to that chat, you will need to sign up for a new login on that site. You can register at http://ch.chaikaapi.com/member.php?action=register. You do NOT need to enter a valid email address; just put in anything like a@b.com.

unable to access because my websense is blocking this. however, i was able to register using my personal computer.

Websense will unblock it in a few days. This is an irritating feature of websense -- all new sites are bad sites according to it.

No. That hide feature is similar to the one on this forum -- to hide your online status from forum browsers when you are just browsing the forum yourself.

so the pluses:

persisting font color
flashing window/tab, and sounds
can delete a chat message

haven't tried so far:
private rooms, invite/uninvite.. maybe when more people join.

looks a bit flashier for work
impy's websense won't let her in.

not just impy, i understand (from an old-chat conversation) that a few others can't access it from work. and this at a time when i had grown fond of old chat.

one more minus.. I am used to keep chat window very narrow, enough to see 2-3 lines at a time... on new chat if I try to keep it lesser than half length, it closes the chat window altogether.. the lower frame is non negotiable... thus the window gets more visibility... not kosher.

tracy i can't chat. my wife has put restrictions. still i chat from work and she knows about that. she might put a restriction on that too. i might toe the line or i might talk back. frankly i don't care for i will do whatever she wants me to do till she is right (or till i am wrong). to prove my point, i'll chat tonight till i turn in. i am not trying to create drama here but i feel helpless at the moment.

When I mentioned this morning on chat that I intend to remove the
Forumotion chat application (now that a much superior chat application
is in place), I heard some really strange reactions questioning my
motives, etc. I didn't have time to continue that conversation, hence this post.

So far, the only big problem that I heard is that websense was blocking
the new chat. I heard the complaint from one user. I have been informed
by websense that the block is something that happens with new sites for a
few days until their servers gather enough information about the site.
They have told me that the site will be unblocked in a few days. As soon
as websense confirms that the new site has been categorized correctly, I
will disable the old chat application.

Here are the reasons for the new chat application.

There were many instances of posters complaining about abuse / other bad
behavior on the part of other posters. The new app allows you to easily
ignore people you don't like.
There were repeated complaints about the archive being "dotted" by users
who didn't want lurkers to read chat messages. People "dotting" the
chat can be ignored by anyone who does not like it, on the new app.
Private chat rooms and private instant messaging
Sound and blinking title notifications
Ability to delete your own messages

There are a couple of improvements to the new chat that I am still working on:

More emoticons and font colors -- am sure I can do this
Ability to see who's on without logging into chat -- may be possible
Embedding into this forum so you don't have to go to another page -- not sure if it's possible

If you have any issues with my intent to turn off the old chat app once the new one is categorized by websense, this is the place to air your views.

I am fine with either... on the new one, can you add a 'away' display and maybe make the timeout little lesser, say 20 minutes... you enter into the room, you see people logged in, but really they aren't there.

On the websense website, the new chat still shows up as uncategorized. Once it is categorized, I will disable the old chat.

This has been implemented. Please clear the cache on your browser to see the new options. This is how you clear cache:

Firefox: go to Options, Privacy tab, History section, click on Clear recent history link
Chrome: Options, Under the Hood, click on Clear browsing data button
IE: Tools, Internet Options, click on Delete browsing history button

I have also confirmed that it is possible to display a list of users on chat so you can see it before logging into chat. I will implement that next.

You can now see who's on SuCHat without logging in. See the SuCHat section right on top of the Latest Topics thing on the side.

Websense has responded to my request and confirmed that they have categorized the new chat app correctly as Web Chat. This allows people behind websense filters to access it. I just tested it, and it works. (Ironically, the websense filter at this location blocks out Forumotion, so I needed to use my phone tethering to post this!)

Now that the new chat is functional, I have disabled the old chat application. Please go to the top of the Latest Posts list on the right hand side of any forum page, to see who's online on chat and login.

Can you relax the timeout logout rule a bit?

Right now it makes u inactive in 5 minutes, and kicks you out in another 5. For most of us who also work on the side, this is a pretty big commitment to keep. And I have a long password, not pretty.

I think it does... or maybe it does if you tab out of that window, which is quite common.
