This is US of A where.....
... ..even the frauds and charlatans are sentenced to prison and that too for almost double the number of years of what the maximum sentencing is in India. Bravo!
"The former leader of the now defunct Hindu Temple of Georgia was sentenced Monday to nearly three decades in prison.
Annamalai Annamalai — also known as both Dr. Commander Selvam and Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar — was convicted in August on federal charges including tax fraud, bank fraud and bankruptcy fraud. He was sentenced Monday to spend 27 years and three months in prison."

Goes on to prove that this kind of shit is not encouraged in US. Ya, if only this guy had stayed back in Coimbatore, he'd have made an empire by now like this other guy, earned more respect and adulation and most important of all, would've been immune to being charged for any kind of crimes for life!Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:

the power of the evangelical churches and their ability to generate vast financial empires in the united states is unparalleled. they use every trick in the book to keep functioning as non-profit organizations. only the hyper religious and the incredibly naive will think of them as anything other than existing for their own financial well being. if one is truly concerned about getting rid of financial excesses in the religious industry complex, one would lobby one's legislators to change tax laws that make these entities legal. catching some beardo sod pilfering a few dollars is not going to change the larger problem.

you get no credit for this post, even though you sound as if you deserve some for appreciating the proper administration of justice.
you sound embarrassed.
btw, what does the word "even" mean in your first sentence?

All the other rut in the first part of your post where you rub your personality on to others, which you normally do, can be ignored.

At this point of time, i don't care about what goes on in the evangelical churches. Right now, i am glad that a fraudulent guy cheating ppl in the name of Hinduism has been sentenced to prison.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:the power of the evangelical churches and their ability to generate vast financial empires in the united states is unparalleled. they use every trick in the book to keep functioning as non-profit organizations. only the hyper religious and the incredibly naive will think of them as anything other than existing for their own financial well being. if one is truly concerned about getting rid of financial excesses in the religious industry complex, one would lobby one's legislators to change tax laws that make these entities legal. catching some beardo sod pilfering a few dollars is not going to change the larger problem.

This is the key. All non-profits are real issue. They can write off so many expenses probably a 60 Million $ Plane for the pastor (the recent donation request which was later withdrawn by Pastor $Dollar (yes. His name is $Dollar). There are mega churches with lots of money and expenses/tours for the pastors/vacation/planes are all written off as expenses/evangelical travel..MaxEntropy_Man wrote:the power of the evangelical churches and their ability to generate vast financial empires in the united states is unparalleled. they use every trick in the book to keep functioning as non-profit organizations. only the hyper religious and the incredibly naive will think of them as anything other than existing for their own financial well being. if one is truly concerned about getting rid of financial excesses in the religious industry complex, one would lobby one's legislators to change tax laws that make these entities legal. catching some beardo sod pilfering a few dollars is not going to change the larger problem.

Max's rant is quite relevant. The original post is about religious frauds. Max is merely pointing to the fact that many religious frauds in usa are not yet caught or not pursued by us Government for fear of religious backlash. His second point that religious cheats also influence laws to make it easier for them to cheat is even more alarming.
Your eagerness to find fault with max's reasonable follow up sounds like you want to defend these religious exploiters.

there's nothing absurd about commenting on your weak excuse for dr. sir air marshal commmander annamalai selvam.
admiral selvam was breaking u.s. laws, whereas I don't think the christian evangelists on tv and in the churches generally are, no matter how preposterous and crass their preaching is. when the christian evangelists defraud people, they too are prosecuted.
do you think that the existing laws on religious and charitable organizations, especially the christian ones, are unfair or unjust? if so, you should make efforts to have those laws changed.
this thread, however, is about a hindu priest who routinely and knowingly broke the law, not about the unfairness of existing laws.

You are full of it. Us govt is no better in dealing with the fraud of well known religious figures than most countries. They are scared of them.
The more important point is that U.S. lawmakers are afraid of these leaders and fudge laws to suit their cheating.
However your bigoted mind will find every excuse to admit that.

i neither made an excuse for the hindu priest, nor did i say that other religious organizations that break the law aren't caught and prosecuted. if you perceive my post as an excuse for this hindu priest, we have nothing further to discuss. i simply disagree with you about my motives and it is really odd that you'd perceive my post as a defense of the hindu priest.
however, i did want to broaden the discussion to how religious organizations, especially evangelical churches use the tax code and become non-profit megaladons ripping the US govt and therefore the american people of hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue. yes it is my opinion that the laws should change. i do write to my legislators from time to time, but the state where i live is not the headquarters of any prominent evangelical outfits.
it's like this - the selvams of the world are like the guy who robs the neighborhood convenience store. they often get caught and receive prison terms. the evangelical churches are the wall street firms that bend and abuse every tax loophole available and are always walking the line that separates the merely unethical from the illegal. they seldom get caught.

If you read internet posts from the isha followers, they all sound like robotic zombies, spewing off jaggi's 'deep' one liners about finding enlightenment. Many try to convice others that they are 'better' after doing isha.
...from the discussion in the link. We see a good example here.

Isha Foundation is an Empire? I know they have about 100-200 acres acquired more than two decades ago when rural agricultural land prices were not this inflated. Also since then they haven't managed enough surplus funds to acquire even an additional 10acres there or anywhere else in India for their other projects.
Their 1000 acres TN ashram was acquired for about $1m in two transactions. To raise $2-3 million for constructing the meditation hall and the lodges took them more than 5-6 years. So much for their deep pockets and access to wealth. In comparison, Hindu temple projects in NJ and VA manage $5-20 million fund raising within an year or two.

It is not that major religious cheaters are not caught. They are not pursued with vigor. Why? Couple of examples.
IRS commissioner said their budget was cut by 300 million and they cannot follow up on Tax cheaters with the same zeal as in the past. Who cut the 300 million? Republican congress. Why? Because IRS pursues wealthy tax cheaters and right leaning political pacs disguised as non profit organizations.
SEC is also treated the same way so that they cannot pursue corporate filing errors as vigorously as they did before.
You can extend the argument to religious tax cheaters. It is willful hindrance on the part of religious supporters that stymied govt investigation.

From the same discussion:
One can easily see the parallel in the church rising evangelists that 'heal' people. The believers go into bouts of spasms and unconciousness, yet not one of them gets healed from their disease. Guess what, i haven't seen any enlightened isha followers either. Only Jaggi is 'enlightened' and he's the only one claiming it. Why does everyone believe it without question?
