PM expresses India's steadfast backing for Palestine statehood
"India is steadfast in its support for the Palestinian people's struggle for a sovereign, independent, viable and united state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, living within secure and recognizable borders side by side and at peace with Israel."
"We look forward to welcoming Palestine as an equal member of the United Nations," Singh said.
Why o' why?

"side by side and at peace with Israel"

Yeah. Ain't gonna happen. All the rhetoric of the PM is for the benefit of the Congress wrt muslim vote bank, with least regard to the national interest. If India has a conflict with Pak over Kashmir again, I wonder if Palestine or any muslim nation will support India.

India has become a busy body trouble maker in the world.
US-Israeli forces should destroy Indian military, so India will not create mischief around the world.

Re: PM expresses India's steadfast backing for Palestine statehood
India has only re-iterated its known position on this issue.
However, there are many unresolved issues in Palestine. Some of the issues among others
a) What is the status of Hamas controlled territory in the proposed Palestine State ?
b) What about the charter of Hamas, which vows Destruction of Israel ?
c) What about the refusal of PA to recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state ?
d) What is likely to be the constitution of Palestine. Is it a secular state or an Islamic state ?
e) What about the status of the so-called Palestinian refugees' right to return ?
f) Ultimately, Palestine should be able to sustain itself economically. In that respect its future is inextricably linked with Israel. It is unclear whether a majority of Palestine gets this, and
How does the Palestine country as a whole, wants to sustain itself economically ?
g) What is the the border of the proposed Palestine's state with Israel ?
All these cannot be brushed aside.
One thing which is not clear, is the need for India to explicitly specify where Palestine's capital should be, especially since Jerusalem is a tricky issue, that has always been a subject of negotiations between Israel and Palestine. India could have supported the statehood demand, without this explicit reference. I do not know whether the requested UN proposal from Palestine that is up for Vote, explicitly mentions this.
India should keep in mind the strong support its gets from Israel for its security and for agricultural/technology co-oepration. No other country has supported India more in its quest to secure itself than Israel. So it needs to support Palestine's emergence as a new country, but at the same time take positions against new threats to Israel's security.
India should help Palestine in setting up democratic institutions that support statehood, so that it can sustain itself as a new country. A new country has rights but it also has duties. (Example: Pakistan which openly violates its duties towards its neighbours). The new country Palestine should also have institutions which ensure that it can sustain itself as a responsible member of the comity of nations. Once it becomes a country, the regional security situation could become grim, if the country gets used by various groups to further their violent agendas. Palestine's emergency as a new country, should result in peace and not result in newer wars, creating a more volatile situation.
The pattern in the region always has been as follows, a group of people create security (terrorist acts) problems for Israel, Israel responds with more severe controls on the entire Palestinian territory , putting all Palestinians in trouble. Israel in its quest for security, enhances the borders by new settlements to create buffer zones, creating more trouble for Palestinians. Whatever is done there is a need to break this pattern.
Thus, while it is important for Palestinians to get statehood which will prevent them from being under the control of Israel, it is also important that there are strong institutions and regional support to prevent groups from using Palestine state to launch more terrorist acts/religious proxy war against Israel.
If Palestine gets new country status, to alleviate their suffering as an occupied territory, it is very important that safeguards are put in place, to ensure that actions which can create new security threats to Israel /Palestine ensures automatic UN intervention. I do not see any meaningful focus on this aspect in the UN.
