why the economics ph.d. is so competitive
here, "competitive" = "hard to gain admission to, especially in the u.s."
from the following thread:
www.econjobrumors.com/topic/why-is-the-economics-phd-so-competitive
excerpts:
Competitive because many quantitatively strong students from math, physics, snd engineering enter economics nowadays. In the past, econ students compete with econ students only, and most of them are nowhere above sociologists and humanities students (i.e., dumb as fieck)
Econ is lucky that it pays well. Physics and math are considerably more competitive, their job prospects are bad. People willing too sacrifice a lot to do stuff they like.
Most people don't want the job that pays the most. People tend to satisfize and simply settle for the one that pays a reasonable amount of money. Other things matter a lot more, as long as the pay is OK.
there is also a concentration of power in American programs so in this sense it's even more competitive that nearly anything else. You're competing with people from all around the world for around 100-120 spots at the top 5 schools. You've literally got to be one of the best 100 people in economics IN THE WORLD to make it into a top program. if you're a top doctor in, say, Turkey, you can go to a turkish med school and be just fine.

Re: why the economics ph.d. is so competitive
about 2/3 of the economics ph.d. students studying in the u.s. are from outside the u.s., not from china, india, or korea, but mostly from western europe. among the 22 ph.d.s who graduated from the u of chicago a week ago, only one had indian parents.
graduate students working towards their ph.d.s in the u.s. are probably the most internationally diverse set of college students in the world. the london school of economics may also be quite diverse.
