plastic rice

Bengaluru, Mar 12: We have heard of adulterated oils and vegetables, but it's news from Kerala that rice made of plastic is being sold in many parts of the state. The 'rice' is supposedly made in China by mixing potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic. The potatoes are first formed into the shape of rice grains. Industrial synthetic resins are then added to the mix.

i think,

- it is undetectable to the eye (not to tests);

- it comes mixed with normal rice "packets" not "rice;"

- why not oneindia? oneindia is a gossip tabloid? no clue.

I would be suspicious of any story that cites unnamed consumers and experts without any names or direct quotes.

IMO, potato or sweet potato on a gram by gram basis is more expensive than rice. Add to it the cost of "industrial resins" and the manufacturing set up, and the shipping cost. It would be much cheaper to just grow rice.
