...... a new system to rank universities. Universities in India should be checked for their Sikular character, and given credit for admitting SC/ST students getting 6% & OBC students getting 30%, in exams. "Upper caste" students who get above 90% should be sent to Adilabad district in Telangana, Srikakulam district in AP, Southern Chhattisgarh, Bimaru Bihar and the tribal belt in Odisha to do hard labor under the Rajiv Gandui Yuva Yojana program.

Garibi Hatao.

Nothing to worry....Media will soon discover some other survey that will list a couple of Indian universities in the "TOP 50" under some twisted classification.

The drop in rank is due to RSS/BJP/Modi

the ranking of the IITs is terrible, but where are the universities that are not specialized tech schools -- madras university, annamalai, andhra, and jadavpur?

I just got the following email (reproduced in italics) from an IIT-classmate of mine (1970 batch), shedding further light on the sad situation.

Your concern are genuine -- I had tried to talk to Additional Secretory HRD -- when Kapil Sibble was the HRD minister-- he flatly told me that "" when IIT Directors are willing to tow the Government line -- so that they can get extension of their Services beyond sixty years -- how can they retaliate -- to lowering of teaching standards?""HRD ministers -- starting with Joshiji -- Arjun Singh -- Kapil Sibbal-- impregnated -- conceived and baby of lower standard delivered and currently she has little to do-- than to keep the system going.

If you are able to lay your hand on a World Bank report published three years back -- Indian standards of Technical Education was at the bottom end-- IIT were rated some 500 ths in ranking--poor teaching of SMET-- that is S- science: physics and chemistry M- mathematics - E- engineering-- T- technology was being down graded -- so as to push political agenda.

The best way for the Government is to " Spread thin teaching resources to larger number of IITs- thus allowing more liberal - ENTRY into the " Institute of Higher Learning.

The several Boards of Secondary Education-- have been preaching reservation -- now they have managed to practice it to one of the best IITs.

Going forward -- the Pan-IIT should draw up a resolution and send it to Cabinet Secretory -- PM and HRD Minister -- with copies to all IIT Directors and Secretary of HRD

Globally we have to compete with China also -- and they are far ahead -- look at their numbers in Bay Area and you will be convinced.

terrible? the iits' ranks are probably well-deserved. moreover, why should the general-interest universities such as madras university receive a high rank among the global 500 or global 1000? for their output of research findings that benefit humanity? for their innovations in the mass education of a newly-free, democratic nation with lofty aspirations?

this dose of reality and the introspection brought about by the global ranking will be beneficial to indian universities and indians. there are quite obvious actions to be taken, and policy changes to be made to improve indian universities. does anyone have any ideas? can anyone discuss them clearly in english?

here's a radically different idea: lower the admission standards, yes, for the iits too; increase, perhaps triple or quadruple the number of places ("seats"); after giving all freshmen an excellent education for one to 1.5 years, filter out those who don't meet the highest standards. we may find that 75% of the freshmen are filtered out.

then make arrangements for the appropriate education of those who are filtered out, and continue the high-level education of those who remain.

no matter how well-received such a plan might be, india should be more willing to experiment with and explore education systems that are more suited to its stage of economic development, and be prepared to shed unsuitable, inherited paradigms.

the other critical factor which I don't discuss here, but must be, is the quality of faculty; not buildings, but faculty.

"science: physics and chemistry"'-- seva's iit classmate.

I find it interesting that biology, that most important and rapidly developing of all the sciences of the 21st century, does not find a place in seva's classmate's definition of science!

the question you ask is irrelevant to the definition of sciemce as merely physics and chemistry.

I admit that it's better to carp, whine, wail, and gnash your teeth here about the gandhi family than to get someone else worked up sufficiently to kill abdul the autorickshaw driver; however, what you do is the equivalent of shaving thousands of cats.

furthermore, no telugu proverb will negate my earlier words: there is no such word as "onbehalf." you may now thank me for teaching you something.

The discussion or context (including the email) was not about the definition of science subjects but what subjects (e.g. chemistry and physics) are necessary during the engineering education (at IITs especially).

he first defines SMET to be made up of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology; then he further defines science to be made up of physics and chemistry. it's quite clear. and surprising.

Don't forget the context in the above -- science in engineering education, which includes little biology (botany and zoology),

This is a specialized field (bio-engineering) in the overall engineering. It involves a limited use of biological sciences (zoology and botany), just like I had a course in botany at IIT during my B.Tech. degree in agr. engg. It does not warrant that botany and zoology be the required courses to all engineering students.
