Re: Happy Onam Ammachi
Happy Onam!
Considering there is a lot of emphasis on farmers, farming, grains , harvest etc. in this festival, perhaps the name "Onam" for festival could have its roots in "Annam" or अन्नम् (in Sanskrit meaning grains or food).
"Onam" festival seems to be a great recognition religiously and socially on the importance of grains / food and those growing them. In other words, undertaking the physical work is as important religiously as other spiritual pursuits. In this regard, the Bhagavad Gita (Ch. 3: V. 8 ) also says, "do your work, lest you starve and fail to meet life's needs."
