Same here. Very saddened by this news. When he stepped down as CEO, I had hoped he would live a few years but alas, it was not meant to be. He had a short life but what a life it was!

Probably it will be another 50 to 100 years before we can see another Steve in the making. Rare gems of a kind sent to earth for innovation. Time said "He invented stuff that you never know you so badly needed." Amazingly true about iPod, iPad, iPhone, Mac etc. Even before Windows made the debut, the mac computer was a great thing for document print out on laser printers with fonts etc.

Apple will probably go down the drain from now for lack of innovation. It can produce existing stuff but in a few years people need new things. Can Tim Cook deliver?

He had pancreatic cancer and also an organ replacement and it is not a surprising news...may be he went thru a lot of pain and hopefully RIP.

life well spent. however, i am surprised that the world leaders are paying tributes to steve jobs. even MMS paid a tribute to him. ain't like he cured diseases and grief. he invented gadgets. i think if one head of state does it, others do it. sheep.

I think it is all overrated. I just got my first flip phone. Dont have any of the i's and iMiss nothing. Basically, he invented things that are not "necessary" as alternatives were/are available.

I like the guy very much as some of his statements jive with what many people say... except he is a billionaire and naturally carries weight and credibility. I have found a series of things that one can say he did wrong that reflected badly on his qualities. Will list them after his cremation. I think he is a deeply disturbed and hurt man.

The sad part is the two extraordinary nobel winners are eclipsed by Jobs this week. Too bad those nobel laureates - who are awarded the 1 mil prize years after their findings often found their way into commerical products - hardly made any money.

Curious to see what Jobs did with his 8 Billion $

He did not "invent" gadgets. He probably helped design them with the help of a team. He had a vision and he executed really well on it. But he did not "change" lives.

i agre MSFT changed the world more than AAPL in terms of impact. the iphone and ipads are extensions of life altering inventions. The mobile phone was life altering, iphone built on it.

Biggest contribution may not be the product itself but definitely the more intuitive design of it.

But was he? Edison and Ford devised innovations so profound they transformed whole societies and materially improved the lives of people who never even purchased a Ford or Edison product. Edison lit public places, while also providing electricity that helped heat them and power other machines. The automobiles that rolled off Ford's assembly lines swept putrid piles of horse manure off of urban streets and made cities more liveable. Edison and Ford, like other historical giants, created progress that could be measured every day in the humblest of homes, while also laying the foundation for entirely new industries.

thanks for that link, r2d2. it puts his success in perspective. when someone's death is fresh in people's mind, they tend to go overboard which is what is happening now.

btw, i don't think he can even be compared with the likes of Edison, Franklin and several scientists who invented medicines and vaccines. At best, he can be compared with Walt Disney and WhatsHisFacebookOwner. let's not forget that he was only a toy-maker.

i think you are probably too young and don't have a sense of history of the computer industry. he is the guy who pioneered the idea of a user friendly, menu driven, intuitive PC. the idea that programs should be easy to use and one shouldn't have to write code for everything came from him. even bill gates admits that. and his work with proportionally spaced fonts is now the industry standard. it had nothing to do with technology but his sense of aesthetics. he attributes it to a course he sat in on at reed college. he was certainly a colossus.

that is true. the first PC I saw had windows '93 on it. and i had/still have no idea how a computer looked like or functioned before that.

yes, i have heard that. however, i was attributing the success of personal computing to MSFT simply because they made it affordable to millions of people around the world unlike APPL. and if you discount whatever success APPL had in personal computing (which, i am afraid, is nothing compared with MSFT's success), then APPL becomes only a toy-maker. and as someone else suggested somewhere else on this site, it is ipod and iphones that's doing business for APPL.

he only produced and engineered the three most successful product launches in history over the past 8 to 10 yrs. if you want to call ipod, iphone & ipad toys, by that token dell just made some plastic boxes, microsoft made some dvds and intel made some boards. also all the programmers in the world are just monkeys typing on glorified typewriters, the president of US - he just flies around and talks on TV & sonia just wears sarees to stand next to manmohan singh's cutout.

seriously, he invented the desktop publishing industry and gui driven computing that billyboy would never have stumbled upon in a million years. his revolution in computing has been eclipsed by wintel partnership's success but doesnt mean it's minor. not to mention pixar, which reinvented an entire and wildly successful industry - animation. not to forget neXt...I actually did some programming on neXt machines in '94...the graphics and what those machines were capable of were light years ahead of anything possible on wintel at that time. besides inventing whole new industries, he did it better than anyone else could.

Disagree. They were pioneers of applying cognitive science to technology and computing. I could be wrong but, Intel, MS etc. made investments in research in anthropology, sociology etc. much later.

Suggest you read "The Design of Everyday Things".

Let me clarify my coments. He is not overrated in terms of being a tech visionary, top marketing guy and technologist. I find him hard to put him in the same bracket as Edison in terms of invention. His contriubtion to computing industry is great but lots and lots of guys contributed with their inventions in semiconductors, hardware design, computer science and communications to bring the technology where it is today. And those enabled him to build i-devices of modern days (with great help from his team of engineers). His contributions to GUI driven computing are enormous but you cannot deny that Microsoft's business strategy put them in homes all over the world. But again MS did not invent it, they just made it more affordable. There a lot of companies who invented quite a few great things in technology but never made money out of it because they could not bring them to market properly.

He was an icon and along with Bill Gates makes for the most recognizable face frm the tech industry. I have tremendous appreciation for his achievments but I still think comparing him to edison or einstein is a bit off.

For the next half-century, Mr. Jobs never let up. He chewed out subordinates and partners who failed to deliver, trashed competitors who did not measure up and told know-it-all pundits to take a hike. He had a vision of greatness that he wielded to reshape the computer, telephone and entertainment industries, and he would brook no compromise.

That is until I read this great piece from Ryan Tate. And I really began to learn something about Steve Jobs. Jobs wasn’t successful just because he was creative, brilliant and hardworking. There are a lot of creative, brilliant and hardworking people running technology businesses. Jobs had an extra little something going on that further separated him from his peers: He was a jerk. Good for him.
