Wwhat made Steve Jobs? Nature or Nurture? Empty Wwhat made Steve Jobs? Nature or Nurture?

Post by Marathadi-Saamiyaar Thu Oct 06, 2011 12:53 pm

This is interesting: Steve who was brought up by uneducated adoptive parents, and who himself never had a degree became a successful, if not a brilliant man.

Compare him with his biological sister - famous Novelist and a professor - who was brought up by her educated mother all along. Both had highly educated biological parents and who are/were also thought to be smart.

So the debate is: Did Steve jobs turned out this way bcz of his biological parents or his adoptive parents, who were street smart.

Steve Jobs thought his traits were mostly bcz of Nurturing until a few years ago, when he changed his views to genes and nature.

Isn't there a saying "You are what you are and everything is fixed at birth (just that we don't realize it at that time)."

I go by my own personal theory - 50:50, genes and environmental. Some are innate and some are acquired.

Like how all my bad qualities are genetic, nothing much I can do about them. Wwhat made Steve Jobs? Nature or Nurture? Rolleyes

Is street-smartness an inherited trait or a learned trait? The answer to this will also answer your question I guess.

The question is, how did he conclude that Job's adopted parents were street-smart?

consider this: ceteris paribus, steve jobs may have been even more successful and brilliant, had he been raised by his educated, biological parents, rather than by his adoptive parents.

all the theories work for moderate levels of "success". All these insanely successful folks are outliers in their own way.

And everything is pre-determined at birth. Stars/moons/rekhas whatever.

but then we wouldn't have the made-for-hollywood human story of his walking miles to a hare krishna temple to get one decent meal so he could keep body and mind together and sit in on classes at stanford. i'm still feeling very blue about his loss. like many others, i've been an admirer for a long time.

You can't say that. His biological father left his wife (Steve's biological mom) and his 4 yr old daughter and went to live in Syria (he later returned to US). Mom raised the daughter all by herself. Job's sister is a writer and an english professor. Had both of them lived like muslims in syria, they wouldn't be thinking outside their boxes and wouldn't have been as successful as they are/were today. Steve wouldn't have been a hippie, experimenting with his spiritual side and wouldn't have adopted buddism. Without an open, free thinking mind, he wouldn't have been the inventor that he was.

He is not alive today and what caused his cancer? Is it biological? Treatment for any kind of cancer is painful and peace!

Genes, lineage, ????

These are not superstitions anymore - more and more these have medical, scientific, and biological evidence. Even depression. anxeity, and other "mental" illnesses have strong genetic and parental linkages. Ironically, even Steve Jobs - who until recent years thot the env made him who he was - changed his views attributing nature to who he was.
.
Please note that I don't and I NEVER associate "degrees" (alone) to intelligence or smartness. I agree with flimmy, he could have done much better with his educated biological parents. OTOH, he could have ended up with a PhD and a professorship at some university, leaving us all to MP3 players or Walkmans.

Talent without tenacity/perseverance/discipline/dedication/luck does not make you billions. i do not think any of them come purely from genes.
