this shows india is really short of fighterplanes thanks to congress' defence minister a k antony's dilly dallying on defence deals in order to keep his image clean ( defence deals are associated with scandals ) , and is willing to compromise to fill in the numbers of the dwindling fighter fleet .

Great decision. This way the Govt can allocate regular funding to "fix" Mark 1 on a continuous basis.

Of course, Mark 2 also will be flawed.

I strongly suggest that they change the fighter name to Ambassador and jump to Mark V right away.

the number of PAK FA / T 50 fighters that india was going to buy from russia has been cut to 65 because india has lost confidence in that aircraft , and rafale numbers to be bought from france have been cut to only 36 .

so we will have to make do with a small air force of less than 500 aircraft in future . in the past india used to have 700 fighter aircraft .

i would blame the congress government which was ruling for 10 years for this lack of strategic vision . the BJP government has been only in power for 1 year and they are trying to handle the situation as best as they can .

the congress government gave a lot of money to the russians to develop a stealth ( stealth means invisible to radar and other means of detection like infra red tracking ) aircraft . but the resultant aircraft is not particularly stealthy . so the IAF , which was going to buy 200+ aircraft is now going to buy only 65 . but a lot of money has been wasted on the project---gobbled up by the russians .

similarly the congress government took the decision to buy the rafale fighterjet . 18 were to be made in france and 108 to be made in india . but hindustan aeronautics simply lacks the ability to make such an advanced aircraft , even though france is ready to provide technology . the congress government should have realised the lack of ability of HAL to manufacture such a complex aircraft before taking the decision to buy it . now some 36 rafale aircraft will be manufactured for india in france itself---but more cant be manufactured in france because manufacturing in france is extremely expensive due to high cost of labour there .

so instead of 126 ( 18 +108) rafales we will get only 36 rafales and instead of 200+ russian stealth aircraft we will get only 65 . so instead of 300 aircraft we will get only around 100 . these are not sufficient to replace the MIGs that are going to retire . so the decision to buy the tejas indigenous fighterjet has been taken even though it is not perfect .

ashdoc,

to sum it up, ak antony's timidness, congress incompetence and sonia's crony corruption placed India's defense in jeopardy. Why is that not surprising?

These air craft design and manufacture is a multi decade project. US is having all kinds of problems with its latest fighter jet (F-34). Most of F-34 problems are technical as they are trying to push the what can be done technology.

India probably have to negotiate with US to get such top of the line air craft. The outlook on the horizon appears to indicate India sailing with USA for the next 2 to 3 decades if not more.

That not only the UPA (Italian) screwed up the economy, they also messed up the Indian military and finances, and not to mention international relationship.

both is due to technical reasons . the congress government wanted dassault company of france ( which manufactures the rafale ) to stand guaruntee for the HAL made rafales too . this they were not ready to do . they said that we will stand guaruntee only for france made rafales . HAL made products are made in its pathetic work culture and are likely to be substandard , so dassault cannot guaruntee quality of HAL made rafales . this bogging down of negotiations was occurring during the long congress tenure itself . by the time modi came the negotiations were at a standstill .

the congress government also had realised that the russians were taking us for a ride and had already scaled the orders of the russian PAK FA / T 50 fighter from 220 to 127 . the modi government has further scaled down to 65 . but the amazing thing is---the russian government has scaled down its own orders to only 12 aircraft !! so the russian government itself has no confidence in their own aircraft . now the russians are asking for more money to develop a completely new engine ; the testing of the aircraft is going on using old engines of sukhoi 27/30/35 aircraft....so now the modi government has to take decision on whether it has to give money to develop the new engines . understandably it is dragging it's feet over the issue , but the decision will have to be taken in next few months .
