Tamilini mourned, The woman who inspired millions of Tamils around the world
Tamil politicians across the North-East have paid tribute to Col. Thamilini, the former head of the Women’s political division in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who died on Sunday at the age of 43.
Thousands of Tamils attended her funeral in Jaffna on Tuesday.
“The grief and affection shown by our people at the loss of Thamilini, even six years after the end of the war, is a testament to the life that she lived and the spirit of leadership she demonstrated during the struggle,” the Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C. V. Wigneswaran said in a tributary statement.
“With an unrelenting thirst for her ideals, the courageous Thamilini's thoughts were all about the liberation of the Tamil people and the advancement of Tamil women.”
The MP, S. Sritharan, like Thamilini a Kilinochchi native, paid tribute to her political prowess, saying Thamilini’s speeches on liberation politics were powerful and persuasive and that her political work had attracted huge numbers to the struggle.
“She was full of political knowledge and energy,” senior TNA MP Mavai Senathirajah said while paying tribute to Thamilini at her home. “She had the ability to lead and influence.”
E. Saravanapavan, MP said in a statement, “memories of that valiant lady that devoted herself to her principles will always remain in the minds of the Tamil people.”
Nothern Provincial minister B. Deniswaran called for Tamil people around the world to observe a minute’s silence in memory of Thamilini.
