he's been the president of the federal reserve bank of minneapolis since 2009, and therefore a member of the board of governors of the federal reserve system. 

n.k. has been a professor of economics at stanford u and the u minnesota, at the latter as chairman. he's credited with raising the rank of the department at minnesota to a top 10.

he has a b.s. in mathematics from princeton, and a ph.d. in economics from chicago. his parents were statisticians at johns hopkins.

around 2009, n.k. underwent a "dramatic and surprising" change from monetary hawk to dove, and made speeches justifying his change of views.

in january, 2016, he'll return to academia, to be chairman of the economics department of the u of rochester.
