It is an established fact that Uttar Pradeshi brahmins enjoy a unique prestige in Hindu society. As an example, consider the fact that the pandas of Kashi and Prayag are renowned for their knowledge of Hindu rituals. The well known Such poster and scholar Vakavaka Pakapaka has written that he performed rituals and rites for his own father in Kashi and Mathura (and not in his native Andhra Pradesh), no doubt because according to Vakavaka the Pandits of Uttar Pradesh are superior in knowledge to the Pandits of his native Andhra.

here is another example of how Uttar Pradeshi brahmins are superior to other brahmins. The highest brahmins amongst Bengali brahmins are Mukhopadhyay (also known Mukherjee), Chattopadhyay (Chatterjee), Gangopadhyaya (Ganguli) and Bandopadhyay (Banerjee). bengali brahmins of these four castes enjoy a higher prestige than other bengali brahmins like Sanyal, Lahiri, etc.

But the interesting thing to note is that the Mukherjees, Chatterjees, Gangulis, and Banerjees are all Kanyakubja brahmins, while the other brahmins are not. All kanyakubja brahmins originate from the region in and around Kanauj in Uttar Pradesh. The Mukherjees, Chatterjees, Gangulis, and Banerjees were immigrants to Bengal from Uttar Pradesh. Since they were more knowledgeable than the local brahmins (Lahiri, Sanyal, etc.) the Uttar Pradeshi immigrant brahmins were elevated so as to belong to a higher status and social prestige than the local brahmins.

Or, perhaps, the Uttar Pradeshi immigrant brahmins in Bengal elevated themselves so as to belong to a higher status and social prestige than the local brahmins who meekly acquiesced.
