This Jeyendra saraswathi - if I remember right - is the one who disappeared from the Ashram for some time after he was ordained as Shankaracharya, Jr. Was missing in action for some months/years (need to google for it) and who knows how many Jr. Jeyendras are like to show up.

News item is about pope Paul 2 but why is scorn reserved for sankaracharya?

Islam got the right idea. You don't hear about Muslim mullas running after skirts since they already have four or five wives at home.

in india the powerful very often get away with murder. it's been many years, but at the time i followed the news and the evidence that emerged fairly closely. at the time, i convinced myself that JS had blood on his hands. i can't imagine why an establishment writer like anuradha ramanan would cook up stories against him. she's not known for stuff like this. in any case it's her word against his and we have to be willing to give him the benefit of doubt. but the murder evidence was pretty strong -- direct cell phone calls etc. i have always been suspicious of godmen in india and JS always struck me as a very oily character. what a comedown for the matham from the old man! and the younger fellow seems even worse. many folks in my family were devastated when this happened and have sworn off the matham and its activities for good.

because he broke many people's spirit in the tamil hindu community, particularly the tamil brahmin community. he deserves all the scorn that we can muster. as far as the saivite tamil brahmin community is concerned, he is their pope.

Generations of catholic popes deserve our scorn, but not for this sensational stuff. They deserve our scorn for overseeing a church that left priests who diddled little boys, go scot free.
