nima and the great collider of china
nima is an interesting fella, a passionate theoretical physicist, one of a handful of today's greatest physicists.
he's trying to interest the chinese government in building the largest and most powerful particle accelerator and collider in the world, which would, at a circumference of 60 miles, be four times that of cern's lhc, cost $10 billion, and operate at an energy of 100 trillion eVs.
the chinese are interested - almost, nearly, something what, that is - partly because this is a rare opportunity for them to be the best in the world at something, probably with little or no competition.
nima arkani-hamed, 43, is of iranian descent, now at the institute for advanced study, in princeton, n.j., and had been a professor at harvard u for several years, and.before that, at u.c.-berkeley.
the entire family are iranian dissidents, and physicists, including father, mother, and sister.
nima's objective is nothing short of restructuring the theoretical foundations of physics, including determining what is knowable and what is not. the great collider of china is a step in that direction. in all this, nima is more credible than others like stephen hawking.
here's a well-written article about nima arkani-hamed:

hmmm...that confession is TMI - but then, given the age, that's understandableswapna wrote:farfetched, feeble.garam_kuta wrote:swapna wrote:nima is an interesting fella, a passionate theoretical physicist, one of a handful of today's greatest physicists.
