Police brutality at UC Davis
Police brutality of this sort is shocking when it happens in the US. I hope the officer in question is investigated and disciplined. The students who got peppersprayed should sue the UC system for damages. There's a constitutional protection against cruel and unusual punishment. Heads must roll; this is truly appalling.

The process of disowning responsibility is fully in motion. This is window dressing. The chief of UC Davis Police needs to be fired. She put out a statement yesterday saying:
“Officers were forced to use pepper spray when students surrounded them”, adding, “There was no way out of the circle”.

Now that videos of the incident have gone viral on the internet, she has changed her tune.

The two officers have been placed on administrative leave and an investigation has begun to review the events on Friday. Due to the investigation, Spicuzza was not able to give her opinion or detailed information regarding Friday's events. But she did say that neither her nor Chancellor Katehi had ordered the police to use pepper spray and that it was a judgement call by the officer in charge at the scene.
According to Claudia Morain, a UC Davis spokesperson, [Chancellor] Katehi has also accelerated the timetable for a task force to investigate the incident. She has set a 30 day deadline for the task force to issue the report. The task force will be chosen this week and will include representatives from the faculty, students and staff.

Lt. John Pike, the pepper-spraying cop at UC Davis, has acquired instant internet notoriety. I hope he loses his job as a result of this action, and gets sued for damages.

“Pepper spray, that just burns your eyes, right?” O’Reilly asked Kelly.
“Right,” Kelly said. “I mean, its like a derivative of actual pepper. It’s a food product, essentially.”
