Benares: Hindu Extremists protest against Ghulam Ali performing bhajans at a famous Hanuman Temple
VARANASI: Pakistani ghazal legend Ghulam Ali may begin his performance with the bhajans composed by legendary Hindu poet and author Goswami Tulsidas at famous Sankat Mochan Temple, which is believed to be built at the very place where Tulsidas had a vision of Bhagwan Hanuman.
"We expect Ghulam Ali saheb to begin his performance with the verses of Tulsidas' Vinay Patrika," mahanth of Sankat Mochan temple Vishwambhar Nath Mishra told to TOI. He had also rendered bhajans at the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh last year, he added. On the request of audience he had also sung his popular ghazal -'Hungama hai kyon barpa...'
Undeterred with the protest expressed by saffron outfits like Hindu Yuva Vahini and Shiv Sena, Ghulam Ali arrived here on Monday. He will perform on the inaugural night of the six-day music festival in temple premises on Tuesday. For the first time he had performed at this temple on April 8, 2015 on the invitation of the mahanth. This time too mahanth invited him, and he readily accepted the invite.
Protesting Ghulam Ali's performance at the temple the Shiv Sena a couple of days ago pasted posters displaying 'Kashi se Ghulam Ali wapas jao', while the workers of Hindu Yuva Vahini submitted a memorandum to the district administration on Monday demanding stop of the show.
"It is needless to oppose Ghulam Ali just because he is a Pakistani. He is here to offer his musical respect in Hanuman Durbar," said the mahanth adding that it is the grace of this stage (Sankat Mochan Music festival) that attracts the Pakistani singer to perform here.
