Re: How Rahul Gandhi ensured the Congress defeat in Assam
The Congress, which has been shredded in Assam, a state loyal to it for 15 consecutive years, should not be perturbed by today's result, said Himanta Biswa Sharma, alleging that when he warned Rahul Gandhi two years ago of how badly the party was imploding, the Congress boss responded blithely with a series of "So whats".
At that meeting, Mr Sarma said, Mr Gandhi seemed preoccupied with "playing with his dog instead of paying attention to the people surrounding him".
Last year, Mr Sarma abandoned the Congress to join the BJP; his widely acknowledged political chops as a strategist steered today's landmark win in Assam, which will become the first North Eastern state to be governed by the party.
Talking to NDTV, Mr Sarma said, "Today is a day of individual accomplishment for me too, because two years ago, I told Rahul Gandhi that if you go this way, Congress will not even cross (the) 25 mark."
The Congress in fact scraped together just 26 of a possible 126 seats. The BJP and its allies won 86.
Mr Sarma said that the Congress, which was pulped in other states like Kerala and Bengal, must recognize that "it has no future even as a major opposition party" unless Mr Gandhi transforms. "He is very arrogant...when you go to see him, it is a servant-master relationship which is disgusting," Mr Sarma said. "Either he has to change, or the Congress has to change him," was his smouldering diagnosis.

I heard H. B. Sarma today who was even more vitriolic about Sonia and Rahul. There were also two maps of India with states blotted in blue where Congress held power between 2003 and 2016. They told the whole story.

Whomever put Rahul in charge of Assam for Congress to succeed must have their heads examined. Perhaps Sonia insisted but that was a horrible mistake. Here's a guy who grew up and had all his schooling in Assam who could have helped Congress. Instead Rahul doesn't value him until he rejects Congress, joins BJP and helps the party win there. No wonder Sarma won't return his phone call. Rahul is like the kiss of death for Congress. When will Sonia see it?

Soon after the debacle in the Lok Sabha, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi had offered to resign in 2014. "We never knew why his resignation was not accepted to pave way for a young face like Himanta Biswa Sarma to lead the party," said a senior leader. Sarma ultimately left the party and spearheaded the BJP's campaign in the state — also winning his own seat by a margin of 90,000 votes.
Giving details of what he called Rahul's casual approach, Sarma told reporters how he made several rounds of Delhi to meet the vice president. When he finally did get an "'audience"' to impress upon him the need for the change in leadership in Assam, he said he was told to complete his presentation in two minutes. Gogoi and party general secretary in-charge C P Joshi were also in the meeting and started fighting in Rahul's presence.
While Sarma was trying to complete his presentation, a little dog walked in and started eating biscuits from the plate meant for guests. "Rahul turned and started playing with dog instead of listening to us," he said. "After I came out, I told Gogoi that it would be impossible for me to continue in the Congress," Sarma added.

Rashmun, your friend, Diggy Vijay has come out today bashing Congress as needing surgery, indirectly making snide remarks about Pappu. Interesting.

Yes. Like me, Diggy Raja has lost confidence in Rahul.
