As always, for every guy like Chen, there are a 100 who got lost on the break and lost their way completely.

So what works for Chen may not work for you.

He worked for the same employer for a decade before he took his gap year off. How long have you worked?

you are not, and you will not. however, there are two major reasons why you posted this. there are also two major reasons why you will not take a break. it's likely that you'll never take a break.

"relatively more" is incorrect. if A is more than B, then, needless to say, it is so relative to B.

I'd advise to make sure you've been in the workforce solidly for a few years, and put all that money away in savings and investments. Nothing gives as much confidence as financial stability. Also, factor in if you will need to take future breaks for child care.
Be prepared to explain the gaps for the rest of your life. Some professions are better than others in terms of how the breaks are perceived, but it is probably difficult across the spectrum.  The article talks about the slacker label, and there's some truth to that. People have this notion, esp about women, in some hard-charging fields.

BTDT, and actually, it has been hellish at times, and not so bad other times. Being secure and unapologetic about whatever choices you make is the only way to go about it.

I see you are untaking a break.
