Gujarat: Cow carcasses rot and create a health hazard as angry Dalits stay away
RAJKOT: Cattle carcasses are rotting and creating health hazard in Saurashtra and north Gujarat as Dalits have stopped the work of clearing the remains, angered over the flogging of their community members at Una for allegedly skinning a dead cow last week.
Bovine carrion lie unattended on the outskirts of villages as Dalits are refusing to take them for skinning and disposal. In Surendranagar, people said there's an unbearable stench at Ganpati railway crossing where a buffalo carcass that has been decomposing for days now.
"Ever since the Una assault, we stopped collecting carcasses and skinning dead cows in protest," said 63-year-old Dhanji Makwana, a BJP councillor from Limbdi, who had a contract with the local panjrapole (cattle shed) to dispose of carcasses...
Cow protection outfits are completely clueless about dealing with the situation. "We can only pray that no more cows die," said Haresh Joshi, member of Hindu Gau Raksha Dal that works in Ahmedabad district. "We were not aware about this problem. We will soon call a meeting of our gau rakshaks and discuss ways to dispose of the carcasses," he told TOI.
Activists said this is first time in the history that Dalits have united so strongly. "The call to stop disposing carcasses is being followed by all religiously," said Natu Parmar, a Dalit rights activist.
In Rajkot, a group of maldharis (cattle rearers) submitted a memorandum to the Surendranagar collector calling for an immediate solution to the grievances of Dalits."
