Jaipur, August 5
More than 500 cows died in 10 days allegedly due to poor management and lack of green fodder at Hingonia Gaushala, a cow shelter run by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation.
“Fifty cows perished per day last week since the heavy rains hit the city,” said Harendra Singh, Chief Veterinary Officer.
“On an average, 35-38 cows die every day because of ill health and accidental injuries. These were the stray cows brought here. They were sick and not taking proper feed. They probably died due to ill health,” he said.
The Vasundhara Raje government also claimed that stray cows brought to the shelter had died because they were suffering from malnutrition.
Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry KL Meena said Rs 10.78 crore was granted to the shelter in 2015-16 and 14 veterinary doctors and 24 livestock assistants were deputed there. He claimed that there was no lapse in the upkeep of the shelter. Those bovines died were old and unhealthy.
Fifty tractor trolleys were pressed into action to dump carcasses in a remote area on the outskirts of the city.
Dr AK Gupta, Director, Veterinary Department, said the shelter had best poly-clinic and infrastructure to take care of all kinds of cattle, and it was probably the rainy season that caused the tragedy.
Rajasthan Congress president Sachin Pilot, Leader of Opposition Rameshwar Dudi, and Jaipur district Congress president PS Khachariwas visited the shelter. They accused the ruling BJP government of seeking votes in the name of cow, but not granting funds for the upkeep of cow shelters. The Congress demanded action against the guilty officials.
The shelter has more than 200 employees for upkeep of 8,000 cows.
