Synthesis in Karnataka: The first Pontiff of the famous Sringeri Mutt established by Adi Sankaracharya was an Uttar Pradeshi
As is well known, Adi Sankaracharya was from Kaladi in Kerala. He travelled to North India and participated in philosophical debates, the most famous of which was his debate in Benaras (Kashi) with a renowned scholar called Mandan Mishra. (It is said that when Sankara was looking around for Mishra's residence in Benaras he was informed by locals that he could locate it after going to a particular locality and knocking on the house where a parrot is heard reciting the Vedas.)
Mishra's wife, Bharati, was also a scholar and she was the judge of this debate; she declared Adi Sankara to be the winner of this contest after Mandan conceded defeat. Bharati then invited Sankara to debate with her, and Sankara went on to defeat her also. Following this, both Mandan Mishra and Bharati became disciples of Sankara. Mandan subsequently took on the name Suresvaracharya and he was made the first pontiff of the Sringeri mutt established by Adi Sankara in Karnataka.

Locals hurled insults and chased away a group of Uttar Pradeshis who came to Karnataka to write Railways employment examinations.

Modern hindi did not exist in Sankara's time. Sanskrit as the link language must have helped in communicating with scholars and priests, but Sankara must have had to communicate with locals who did not speak sanskrit. After all, he personally established mutts in four corners of modern India. It is held that after his victory over Mishra many people came forward to become Sankara's disciples (including Mishra and his wife). Since he was in Benaras at this time, one must acknowledge that the first followers of Adi Sankara were all Uttar Pradeshis. Gradually he started having disciples from different parts of India and when he went about establishing the mutts these disciples must have acted as interpreters to help Sankara interact with the locals.

a curious anomaly is that even as Vedanta became the preeminent hindu philosophy all across India, in Sankara's native Kerala the Mimansa philosophy continued to hold sway.

Why did some Hindians successfully blocked installation of the great Tamil poet Valluvan in the park where sankaracharya statue is there?
