A reported decision of the Central government to shut down certain regional news units of All India Radio has evoked sharp criticism from political parties here. In Tamil Nadu, the Tiruchi AIR unit is being wound up.

Political parties have said that broadcasting Tamil news from New Delhi and not from Tiruchi might result in “national news getting more prominence” than regional news.
