The question is whether Manafort violated American law. And that's before any evidence emerges connecting the hackers to him. If that happens, he may even face jail.

Donald Trump's campaign chairman helped a pro-Russian governing party in Ukraine secretly route at least $2.2 million in payments to two prominent Washington lobbying firms in 2012, and did so in a way that effectively obscured the foreign political party's efforts to influence U.S. policy.
Under federal law, U.S. lobbyists must declare publicly if they represent foreign leaders or their political parties and provide detailed reports about their actions to the Justice Department. A violation is a felony and can result in up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Manafort was "in talks with the government" last year about the fact that his work on behalf of foreign governments required him to register as a foreign agent. Similar to Flynn, who acted as a foreign agent at the same time he was a senior figure in the Trump team.

Starting the next day, stories came out about Manafort illegal activities.

Oh dear! Now there is talk of Manafort flipping.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-manafort-idUSKBN1A70F8
U.S. investigators examining money laundering accusations against President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort hope to push him to cooperate with their probe into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia, two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said.
If this happens, the Trumps will be in serious trouble.
Interestingly in the context of this thread, this report says Bharara was investigating Manafort before Trump fired Bharara.
Former Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was investigating Manafort's real estate dealings before he was fired by Trump in March, and Mueller has now assumed control of that investigation, one of the sources said.

Re: Oh dear!
I like our president trump more than I like anyone else on the republican side. including john McCain.
Donald is a man without any secrets, he's very open about what he wants to do, a guy from queens, overall will be okay. Silliness and idiocy abound but he has none of the sneakiness of sessions, pence or paul ryan. none of the sneakiness of mitch mcconell.
I like how DT is giving the republicans a hard time. Don't expect any accomplishments but mostly sound and fury and hopefully the four years will be done, time well-wasted and we can go back to a normal president after that. As long as RBG is alive and well, everything should be fine.

As a liberal, I do enjoy the chaos created by this predisent. It is very entertaining to see Sessions squirm. It is great to see Ryan and McConnell have to make up excuses for him, and then have him call them "the Republicans" and blame them for not doing their jobs. I love seeing Mike Pence defend him and his cronies only to be proven wrong, time after time.pravalika nanda wrote:I like our president trump more than I like anyone else on the republican side. including john McCain.

But I worry about what this presidency does to America. Many norms that presidents have followed for decades have been thrown to the wind by Trump: disclosing tax returns, putting your assets in a blind trust, not talking politics with active-duty military personnel, not undermining your own cabinet members in public, not undermining the federal judiciary, not firing the FBI director because he's investigating your campaign, to name a few. Whether it is Trump or Pence, they will do the same damage to the courts and the environment. But Trump damages our institutions with his recklessness.

Re: Oh dear!
I see. Those are all valid concerns. I guess I haven't given it much thought. But I also suspect that Trump does these things because he is a very successful, waelthy and confident man. He is also very old. I think he has nothing to lose, he can take these risks. He can afford to be utterly stupid and shameless and coarse. If he fails, he will still be loved by a few and he still has his palaces. There will be no other candidate like this again in my lifetime who will go against tradition or the winds of common sense like this. I'm sure of it.Idéfix wrote:As a liberal, I do enjoy the chaos created by this predisent. It is very entertaining to see Sessions squirm. Releasing tax returns must become mandatory, this must become the law of the land for all candidates for the safety of the citizenry, but anyhow Mueller will look into Trump's for sure. Stuff like pulling out of the paris accord can be fixed.
Pence Gorsuch Sessions and Ryan - these are the guys who could really cause destruction.
I am worried about how the situation will look if RBG dies prematurely. Actually that is the only thing that I care about that could have an immediate adverse effect on me.
Overall though I think the institutions and traditions will survive. DT is a whirlwind of a man but people like traditions.

This is a good summary (from a conservative journalist and lawyer) of what is happening with Manafort and how he is connected to the original issue of collusion: Russian hacks of the DNC, Manafort altering the GOP platform to help Russia, and potential crimes committed.

Oh dear! Now comes news that Manafort was actively involved in soliciting help from Russians.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/03/politics/mueller-investigation-russia-trump-one-year-financial-ties/index.html
CNN has learned that investigators became more suspicious when they turned up intercepted communications that US intelligence agencies collected among suspected Russian operatives discussing their efforts to work with Manafort, who served as campaign chairman for three months, to coordinate information that could damage Hillary Clinton's election prospects, the US officials say. The suspected operatives relayed what they claimed were conversations with Manafort, encouraging help from the Russians.

Today's installment of Manafort news, thanks to the special counsel's office:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-10/with-bank-subpoenas-mueller-is-said-to-turn-up-heat-on-manafort
Mueller’s team of investigators has sent subpoenas in recent weeks from a Washington grand jury to global banks for account information and records of transactions involving Manafort and some of his companies, as well as those of a long-time business partner, Rick Gates, according to people familiar with the matter.
Who is this Rick Gates, do you wonder? When Trump had to fire Manafort for optics, Gates is Manafort's guy who continued on in Trump's team until well into 2017.

Re: Oh dear!
To quote Jr Douche: I love it, especially later in the summer.
Trump was the one who said it was going to be easy to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something great. That he would take care of everyone, that premiums would go down and the care would improve. And that it would be really easy. Now he is blaming McConnell. It is fantastic to see McConnell being thrown under the bus by Il Douche; couldn't have happened to a more deserving person really!
"You're going to have such great healthcare at a tiny fraction of the cost. And it's going to be so easy."
So much winning, I can't take it any more.

Michael Flynn, former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, is prepared to testify that Trump directed him to make contact with Russians when he was a presidential candidate, ABC News reported on Friday.
Is this why Trump went out of his way to try to get Flynn off the hook from Comey? Is this why he eagerly defended Flynn even after firing him?

Michael Flynn, former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, is prepared to testify that Trump directed him to make contact with Russians when he was a presidential candidate, ABC News reported on Friday.
Is this why Trump went out of his way to try to get Flynn off the hook from Comey? Is this why he eagerly defended Flynn even after firing him?

In secretly recorded audio, the leader's son Yair Netanyahu, then 24, is heard talking to friends who bragged about the cash they had spent on lap dances. Netanyahu talked about offering up his ex-girlfriend to his friends for sex. He spoke about money owed for a "prostitute." Asking for cash, he told one friend that the prime minister had lobbied for a gas deal that benefited his friend's businessman father, a shareholder in an Israeli offshore gas field. "Bro, my dad got your dad a sweet deal," Netanyahu said.

Is he going to be impeached or not? Place your bets.

Not with the current Congress. Many senior GOP leaders were actively involved in the collusion and are now trying to cover it up. They will destroy democracy and ruin American institutions in order to protect their own rear ends, and they won't impeach Trump.silvermani wrote:Is he going to be impeached or not? Place your bets.

It is really interesting how it is all the media's fault.
The prime minister's office said the broadcast was part of an ongoing media witch hunt to topple him and his government. The office called it "persecution, bloodletting and shaming."
These conservatives are quick to ask the poor and underprivileged to take personal responsibility for their condition. But when their own corruption is exposed by the media, they don't take any responsibility and blame the media for exposing their ugliness!

Oh dear! Bannon has been subpoenaed to testify before the Mueller grand jury.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/16/us/politics/steve-bannon-mueller-russia-subpoena.html
The subpoena is a sign that Mr. Bannon is not personally the focus of the investigation. Justice Department rules allow prosecutors to subpoena to the targets of investigations only in rare circumstances.
On Tuesday, Mr. Bannon testified behind closed doors before the House Intelligence Committee, which is also investigating Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Mr. Bannon did not address reporters before entering the proceeding on Tuesday, and a spokesman for Mr. Mueller and a senior White House lawyer did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Re: Oh dear!
The truth is marching on... this one stayed on the Trump campaign after Manafort had to make a show of leaving. Gates knows enough about both Manafort and Trump, and holds the key to their fate at the end of this investigation.

This Mueller team seems has had a pretty big week, with the indictments that have forever discredited the Fake News that the investigation is a hoax, the 20-hour interview of Sloppy Steve and now this.
