if you want to talk about caste...
sports is probably not a particularly important arena. it's probably more egalitarian than other activities.
this is perhaps the most caste segregated sphere of activity that i know. it is high time the younger generation changes this.

Perhaps, this is so in TN.
In AP, both Kuchipudi and Carnatic have artists from different castulu.

Re: if you want to talk about caste...
In current India, Brahmins are not hindering any other group of Indians into entering into music, literature, dance or education. Any over representation is a result of historical family traditions, networking, and may be familiarity with these forms of living. Just like Indian retail business is still dominated by Vysya community even though other communities are opening retail shops.
The question should not be how many people of a community are in a field as it only reflects past influence. Focus should be on present and future participation barriers for entry are ( ex: caste prevents entry) and what are the hurdles for survival and success (ex: Talented people are prevented from performing).

It was mostly the keralite Brahmins living in TN, who had acquired so much clout were known for this, in particular chemmangudi controlling at the top. BMK was suppressed but he valiantly fought them and criticized them of their unworthiness and rightly so- particularly their butchering of Telugu krithis, exemplifying it with " chukkumi Laguthi ippili" . Of course, BMK was brighter than 1000 suns in his craft and the rest is history.

BMK is a brahmin too, a telugu brahmin. i doubt he had to "fight" much. i am talking about how the isai-thamizh movement and the non-brahmins who spearheaded that movement, were systematically suppressed by the tamil brahmin community, who for one reason or another did not want thamizh to attain as central a place in carnatic music as telugu and sanskrit. i am talking about people like madurai somu, brinda/muktha, seerkazhi govindarajan, violinist rajamanickkam pillai and so on who were never given central time slots or venues. a few of these folks as a protest against the brahmin suppression of thamizh in music, vowed to sing only thamizh compositions. they paid for it by never becoming front line concert musicians although a number of them took refuge in the movie industry. thankfully that state of affairs has changed and today thamizh compositions are ubiquitous on the concert stage, and as common as telugu and sanskrit krithis. the entire sordid history (thankfully history) is in my opinion the doing of the tamil brahmin music mafia.
while nothing overt happens today, the CM scene in chennai is still largely dominated by tamil brahmins. some of us fans would like to see that change.
