New Theory: "Krishnadeva Raya was the cause for decline of Vijayanagar Empire"
Krishnadevaraya is not the greatest king of Vijayanagara Empire also known as Karnata Empire. By the time he came to power Vijayanagara was a great empire (for nearly 200 years).
If you go by MM Kalburgi, Krishnadevaraya is the reason for the decline of Vijayanagara. He is promotion of Telugu and Vaishnavism in Vijayanagara did not go well with Kannadigas and Lingayats.
He ruled only for around 20 years but changed a lot. He built many Vaishna temple in a Shaiva dominated Hampe (Virupaksha, a Shiva is the main god). All his 8 diggajas were Telugus. I think, he did this to get help from Telugu Brahmin scholars since he did not trust Kannada Lingayats. He posted Telugu Brahmins in higher posts.

Re: New Theory: "Krishnadeva Raya was the cause for decline of Vijayanagar Empire"
BELGAUM: Kannada research scholar and former vice-chancellor of Kannada University (Hampi) Dr M M Kalburgi has said that Vijaynagar empire, ruled by Krishnedevaraya collapsed not because of Muslims, but due to a war between Kannadigas and Telugus.
Inaugurating a national level Kannada Research Methodology Workshop organsied by Kannada Sahitya Parishat and local Lingaraj College here on Wednesday, Kalburgi said that final war of Vijaynagar which broke at Talikoti was not between Hindus and Muslims, but it was between Kannadigas and Telugus. He said that Krishnadevaraya had brought Telugu culture in Kannada soil. He advised the Karnataka government to stop conducting of Hampi Utsavs which is being organised to give importance to Krishnadevaraya and advised research scholars not to fear to tell the truth.
