This dude(according to eenadu story I read last night) says that "There is increase in number of crimes against women because of the way they dress". What an idiot!!

Haha. He also thinks rural women in coastal AP villages wearing salwar kameezes (undoubtedly to ingratiate themselves with NIs) are provoking rapes.

That said, a good-looking woman flaunting her body should be ok with leery looks, wolf whistles and other forms of male appreciation, including but not limited to touching and pinching. It's a corollary to the most important freedom of expression.

Agree... a vast majority of Indians who support such SECULAR govr/politicians, while espousing "fake" equal rights for women and their fakular NRI supporters are included in this group.

I don't see how her freedom of expression is compromised if a girl dresses decent

Dont want to seem old fashioned but girls have a lot more to lose in this boy girl encounter so let's be sensible about it

He is not Hyd Commissioner. He is the DGP of AP(or the highest police official of the state).

My impression on my recent visit to India and HYD in mid summer is that Indian women still dress very conservative. I did not remember seeing any one wearing shorts or mini skirts. At least most women/girls who wore 'so called' provocative dresses are not a common sight in hyd. Jean pants are common but Dinesh is not talking about tight fitting clothes.

Why or where did he get this impression? Is he just giving excuses? Am I missing something here? Are we confusing the cinema dresses with reality?

Ppl in the west dress up in what india is called 'provocative' and they don't any problems with that here. They wear bikinis and suim suits in public beaches and community pools. no probs with that either. they drink, party, take off their shirts at mardi gras et al. no probs there either.

the problem is not with how girls/women dress themselves. it's with the male mentality. that needs to change in india (and more so prolly in the middle east and other muslim countries. the perviness of males is directly proportional to how conservatively women in their societies dress up).

From an evolutionary perspective, we're hardwired in a certain way to perpetuate the species. It is instinctive for individuals to check out members of the other sex as potential mates and signal appreciation / admiration as an early cue before taking the initiative to approach that potential mate. Long time, no see..Hope all is well with you.

I think a common sense reading of your post, and what Chameli, Azhagan are saying..and common sense in general would clearly make one understand- that there are two issues here:

*criminal behavior (the law enforcement official seems to have linked criminal behavior "directly" with dressing to draw attention- which I obviously disagree with and think you and others do too).

*biological attraction- female power of sexuality:) Apparently a woman's body- even the glimpse of a female breast does something not only to unkils but - arouses even the FCC in the 21st Century- they fined CBS almost a million $ for the few secs of Janet Jackon's famous "wardrobe malfunction" and have very different guidelines for male and female body exposure and nudity!

To deny this enormous female power (of) attraction is rather silly- and nothing wrong in women using some common sense..being cautious and..not expose themselves in provocative ways - in certain places where they know-clearly they are going to get unwanted/undesirable attention. Every Safety and Prevention of Sexual Assaults Program for women I have ever attended- has someone *usually a female law enforcement officer- offering this common sense advice to women..not to mention..most grandmothers and mothers who care about the safety of young women offer this advice no matter which culture they may be from..people can take good advice or leave it..it's certainly a choice.

here's a list of things there's absolutely no excuse for:

1. children to die due to malnutrition, hunger, wars, environmental disasters etc
2. ppl to die of hunger when there's excess food production in the world today
3. poor ppl to die of easily eradicable diseases

if you're robbed coz you insist on wearing rolex/jewelry while walking around the hood, yes you're the victim of a crime, but you either a) asked for it or b) too stupid not to realize what's gonna happen. either way there's a better than even chance that your sluttiness/stupidity will continue to mark you as a victim on an ongoing basis.

women get assaulted even if wearing burqas in some parts of the world. they don't get assaulted even when wearing nothing in some parts of the worlds.

In my own home town, women drape a duppata around in some parts of the city, but most of this is to avoid unwanted attention or judgement or disapproval, not to avoid kidnap and rape. At the same time, if you stepped into 'the village', you would see entire fashion parade going on. They come and go in their posh cars, and I am sure they don't even think of stepping out anywhere along the way. No one harasses them anywhere.

Moral of the story:

for women: know the area and chose your dresses before you step out.
for men: if you want continous eye feast, learn to keep your eyes/mouth/hands in check. Grow up and evolve.

However, overall. If the assault does occur, it's the guy's fault, not girls. It's a pity how most women are led into thinking, or maybe feel guilty themselves that maybe they bring it upon themselves. There's just one thing they need to keep repeating to themselves, 'It's not the woman's fault'. No one deserves to be raped, no matter what.

Even if someone is stupid enough to walk with a rolex watch in the streets of newark, if the robbery does occur, it's the robber's fault. Yes, the guy is hurt, but let's not forget to stress that the robber is at fault. For all we know, the guy would have been attacked even if he was wearing nothing expensive. In that case, you may come back and say, 'why was he even walking through Newark?'. But there is no end to this, is there?

People often ask you not to wear heavy jewelry to avoid attention. that is not necessarily to say that wearing jewelry is bad. OTOH acceptable wear is a reflection of society at a given point of time and that is always a work in progress.
