How Mughals were superior to their contemporary Hindus
If a Mughal king married a Hindu woman, their son was had the same status as the son of the king with a muslim wife. That is why there was no objection to Jahangir becoming the next King after Akbar. Jahangir was actually half Hindu (half Rajput, to be precise, since his mother was a Rajput Hindu). In the same way, Jahangir's son Shah Jahan who was the next Mughal King was three quarters Hindu (three quarters Rajput) since his mother was also a Hindu Rajput.
In contrast if a Hindu king in mughal or post mughal India had a muslim consort* their children would be deemed "outsiders". That is why the son of the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao with Mastani was not permitted to even be raised as a Hindu by the contemporary Brahmins in defiance of Baji Rao's wish. Baji Rao's Muslim son later died fighting for the Marathas.
*Although Hindu kings would have muslim mistresses, as the case of Mastani and Baji Rao shows, I am not aware of any Hindu king having a Muslim wife. This further reflects poorly on the Hindus--it means they were fine with giving the muslim woman status of mistress but not of wife.
