Sure Azhagan, since they are doctors- they can handle normal vaginal deliveries (vertex presentations), and depending on training and experience they can manage other presentations. *However- if they do not have the skills..there can be problems, sometimes very serious complications.

Re: To Maria
Sara,
I wonder if you asked me about this, after reading about the very recent news of the horrific and public killing of Dr. Sethulakshmi in TamilNadu- by the enraged husband of the patient who died..due to her demanding a large sum of money and then botching the surgery. I only read the news..don't know this doctor's qualifications. Also read about many doctors who are on strike today in sympathy for their colleague.
The pics were quite gruesome in Facebook..it was a little shocking to see the angry comments against Doctors from so many Indians in Fb and other sites-there is so much anger- really rage against doctors for their demands and gross unethical practices today.
No one condone the killing of doctors, or such demands/gross malpractice by any doctor. Sad indeed.

That story was shocking. I wonder if patients in India have any legal recourse in cases of medical malpractice. Could the man who murdered the doctor have instead sued the doctor for damages?

Re: To Maria
I did not read the story. Did it happen in some small town? In many small towns in India doctors do a variety of things, not just stick to their specialty. My cousin is a doctor in a small town and he treats almost all types of cases -- pregnancies, abortions, colds & fevers, people gored by porpupines or other animals, poisonous snake bites, rabid dog bites, some orthopedic cases (broken arms etc.), and so on. There may be some cases that are beyond his capability, and some may go bad because of non-availability of equipment. But there is no choice. Given the circumstances they do the best they can. However, if there is a money angle and greed involved, that's a shame.

Re: To Maria
The simple answer is technically- Yes.
But as you know, the systems are very different there..and the court cases usually take years. There are no major Malpractice Insurance Coverage for individual doctors (to my knowledge). So, the damage-compensation/settlements have to come from the doctor-or Hospitals/Insts. they work.
Medical malpractice cases- contrary to popular belief are not easy to win (anywhere)- often it's one medical expert's testimony against another..and the cases are complex..settled out of court. In India- it would be even harder for poor people (like the auto driver husband in this case) to afford a good lawyer and go through the long legal process.
I recently went to a good (Civil) attorney for some property related matters. Did not realize how much they charge.esp. if something has to be done quickly. Some of the younger assistants-more recent grads of Madras Law College (will put in a plug for them!) work long hours and work hard. Was interesting to see clients lined up- paying big money..thousands and lakhs seems to be rather common utterances (thought only IT folks make that kind of money!)..things have changed indeed and lawyers have not been left behind:)

Hello Mr. Indo!
Hope you are doing well.
You are right..general practice doctors do almost everything-except, for performing major surgeries. There are still many sincere doctors who do all they can..under difficult circumstances with limited resources..and often do save lives. In this case..without knowing the details, hard to tell. Unfortunately, often unreasonable demands seem to be the reality in these times.

Hello very young stranger!
Who are you? Have we met before? You know how we very, very old citizens are..our memories are highly selective:)
Nice to see you too Mr. Propa..you haven't lost your edge, I see! Can't do a pew, pew, pow, pow..may be just a soft meow:) Hope all is well you too. Enough time has gone by..I do hope all of us old friends unite now and then..here, there, somewhere make it all fragrant!
Every time I see Erin Burnett on CNN..think about you..she's more peppy these days too..with that news group new flick-flicking thing (like the Ipad) thing and all.

Re: To Maria
Maria,
Dr. Sethulaksmi was an anesthesiologist. And she tried to treat a pregnant woman.
That is why I asked.
Even 40 years ago, there were doctors in India who first demanded to know whether the patient had any money before they would even consider to treat him or her.

Sara,
I wondered, but was not sure, since you did not post any news links.
This is apparently not a delivery (as you had first asked me)..it's major surgery- attempting to remove a 25-week dead fetus..which only an OB/Gyn should do, but, again don't know all the specifics and circumstances in this case, which unfortunately ended in the tragic loss of two lives.

The victim's family now claims Dr. Sethulakshmi refused to touch the wailing, writhing Nithya until they remitted Rs 10,000 as deposit.
"She made us wait for two hours and attended to the girl only after her husband Mahesh brought the money," said Kanagalakshmi, Nithya’s mother-in-law.
===> Maria, this really sucks.

Sara,
Thanks for the link.
If this is accurate, Dr. Sethulakshmi was obviously not qualified and trained to perform this surgery, showed poor judgment in even taking this case (Tuticorin is a large city- I would think there are hospitals with OB/GYNs to deal with emergencies), and as you say..it really more than sucks to see Doctors making demands for money while holding patients and their families hostage - in literally times of life and death.
On a diff. note..I was trying to edit a post, and clicked something by mistake and a green bar showed up in your title post! Not sure what to do- can you kindly delete it!

Sure...by the time you win anything, half the family will die and all the money will be paid as bribe.
Haven't you heard of Govt. sancitoned relief checks providing the bankers a bonanza in bribe?
It is a VERY COMMON practice to demand money upfront on a daily basis from the relatives of ICU patients or surgery patients....
Despicable act.... especially, the Govt college docs are subsidized by 90% and Private college docs are subsidized by 90% of marks.

oh that is quite ok maria. the green bar is the post voting meter. since you clicked "+", it has turned green (denoting a positive vote feedback). i will now click "-" and you will notice that the bar against the post will turn to half-green and half-red (denoting one positive and one negative vote feedbacks against that particular post).

Maria,
Please read the comments on Dinamalr. I do not balme the public for getting angry at the doctors in TN. RIP Dr. Sethulakshmi. But she should not have behaved that way.
BTW that auto driver must have really loved his wife very much.
To be honest, I do not blame him.

Sara,
Thanks for the link. They seem to be similar to comments..in Fb, other sites and there are many cartoons about the greed of doctors- with little sympathy. Feel sorry for all of them in this story..apparently the driver and his wife had a lovely love story..kind of heartbreaking and understand the anguish, but can't condone killing of doctors.
*I do not anything about the personal life and lifestyle of Dr. Sethulakshmi. In general, when it comes to doctors and money (anywhere)- appearances can be very decieving. There is a lot of expectations to make more money from family- many are in debt and under enormous pressure to be financially competitive. Since I am a new member here (!) can't post links..there are several articles in recent days about how in the US the "secret" is out..doctors struggling- small medical businesses failing at record numbers.
For lady doctors, if they are married the understanding and support of a spouse is even more important when it comes money matters-professional choices..it makes all the difference.

depends on the situation .
In an emergency anybody is qualified to deliver babies
did u see the movie " 3 idiots "? this college boy delivers a baby with a suction cup which he puts together ha ha
if u ask me who is more ....a midwife or an anesthesiologist I would say midwife .
all an anesthesiologist has delivered is 20 or 30 babies during his training and that too under total supervision
so to answer you ,he is NOT qualified enough .

Tracy,
Thank you. I learn something new every day! Now the questions by distinguished fellow posters over the years makes sense!
I actually thought..the reverse is how its done..a special youtube video posting is a 5 star welcome/treatment, an all excited hello with emoticons is like 4 stars, a hello or acknowledgment with no emoticons is like 3 stars, a news link may be 2 stars, just a question is like 1 star or no stars!

In that case..I am def. for the puppy- since they are more my kind..we dog people can't hide our excitement or enthusiasm! (and thank yous are like two wags!) And we're kind of loyal..most of the time, not bad friends to have around..when times are not so great.
Speaking of which..missed seeing that unique *shrug* of yours too..(three wags for that!) If there was an emoticon for wags will use that!
