On July 18, 1947, the Maharaja of Travancor read out to the people, on Trivandrum Radio Station at 8-45 p.m., his Declaration of Independence: "On and from 15th August, 1947... Travancore will reassume its independence and sovereignty in full measure"

Congress party threatened to take military action once power transfered to them from British. Attempt was made on the life of the Dewan of Travancore, C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer.

On July 30, tye Maharaja wrote to the last British Governor-General and Viceroy Louis Mountbatten, a letter intimating his decision to sign the Instrument of Accession to the Indian Union, "though not without hesitation".

Thus started the Indian occupation of the Malayali homeland.

many other maharajas in both north and south india did not want to join india . wanted to keep their feudal privileges . what is the big deal about one maharaja ?

being part of hindu majority india is the only thing that is protecting the hindus of kerala from being rampantly persecuted by non hindus . in kerala hindus barely form 50 percent of the population and are likely to decline to below 50 percent in future .
