Hindus had no sense of history Empty Hindus had no sense of history

Although Hindus did a lot of creditable work in fields such as philosophy, medicine, mathematics, etc. they had no sense of history. The history books written in pre-Muslim India combine history with mythologies and fantasies.* So, the ancestry of a Hindu king is traced to some Hindu God, for example. Or all kinds of supernatural powers (like flying) are ascribed to some sage about who one is writing about. And other related and assorted nonsense.

It is with the coming of the muslims in India that history as a subject in its own right (devoid of mythologies and fantasies) came into its own. Babur's autobiography is probably the most famous of all history books to have come out of India, but many other muslims had written about India (for example Alberuni) long before Babur came to India.

*One notable exception was Kalhana of Kashmir: the only really great historian India produced before the coming of the muslims.
