well, looks like she resides in a wrong neighborhood. you don't hear such things if you live in affluent neighborhoods with high level of literacy.

What was she thinking?
It was not only rude but also stupid.
If She had done that to a member of the ruling family in Saudi Arabia, She might have ended up with 100 lashes.
Indian Americans have succeeded in keeping a low profile in public and by being star in their fields.
She was asking for it.
Foreigner in America means brown or yellow.
In India, it is White.
Deal with it.

She's not in Saudi. She is a citizen of one of the world's great democracies. She seems to be dealing with it just fine. Are you?

she was out of line. but she's not the one in power here. his reply could have suited his position. He could have not replied at all. It's his reply that leaves one with many open questions and interpretations. out of all the things he could have said or done in response, this is what he had to say. Consider this, this would not be in the news if he didn't respond. Kind of like how Pence didn't respond when he was confronted in a theatre.

Anyone who complains about jerk like behavior towards the WH or the many WH surrogates ought to first confront the loutish behavior of the guy at the top.

He was confronted by an angry, emotional woman who live telecast the encounter. Given the circumstances, he did rather well. This might be a shock to the safe space dwelling liberals but it is a known fact that the average American considers brown skinned people outsiders even if they were born here. Dont like it? Move elsewhere!

He is not an average American. He is the WH mouthpiece. Be that as it may, your reactions are far more interesting and entertaining as you have not only accepted your Republican masters' attitude but actively promulgate it. Like the "house negro" from antebellum days.

Re: Such a great country that allows you to be here
from what i have heard... in china, no non-chinese can become a citizen. Not even if you are born there, but to non chinese immigrants, and not even if you marry a chinese.... exceptions, if any, are rare. In UK, at some point in the 70s, they stopped giving citizenship status by birth. So a child born there would have the same status as their parents at the time of the birth. So can see the perceptions there. (funny i don't know the rules in india).
USA, so far, has had a culture of assimilation. You are born here, you go through the public school systems here, you are a citizen. You may keep parts of your heritage, but you are an american. Even when you take the citizenship, you are made to take the oath to forget about where you came from, and be loyal to america. Regarding what an average american thinks, guess it depends on age and demographics. Most white americans under 50 that I know who grew up in northeast here with a diverse group, they can right away determine who is a real immigrant, and who was born and raised here. Maybe the moment a person starts speaking, or just by the way of mannerisms. And they behave differently with American Borns and immigrants.
So while as immigrants, we may still have some mental block to become assertive towards our rights, especially given the background of the country we came from, what are we going to teach our children? They don't know any other country, and they know the constitution here too well.
Besides, it's a matter of time. Every ethnicity had to struggle and fight to start getting accepted by the ethnicity that came before them. Key point being, unless they fight for it, they are not gonna get it. And that's very american.

Awareness of peoples' prejudices doesn't mean one accepts a status of inferiority or a lowly place in the social hierarchy. Trying to deny that the prejudice exists, arguing that it should not exist or expressed publicly is naive. And, what a joke - you with your uncle Tom attitude posting links to house negro. Remember, the house negro aspires/believes he is on a level above the other negroes but he is still a negro, his master can dispense with him anytime. Just like Uncle Tom's owner sold him after all those years of loyal service. So keep drinking the koolaid and keep tooting your liberal horn - because that is what upper caste whites do, right?MaxEntropy_Man wrote:silvermani wrote:He was confronted by an angry, emotional woman who live telecast the encounter. So this is expected behavior. Then why are people "shocked" about this? We(Indians) didn't come here fleeing persecution or to get social justice. We came here of our own choice - to earn $ and there are trade offs for that. Make peace with that fact or continue to show your "outrage" and be an internet social justice warrior.Idéfix wrote:If a white woman was rude and aggressive towards him in that same setting, he would not have responded with the line about her being "allowed to be here." And of course that idiot of a woman:

of course they will. and our being extra scared and staying under the radar is not a good example setting anyway. I know i have my own inherent fears and prejudices, but it's something i am working on changing myself.
That "crazy" woman in the video was born here. She could have been a crazy white woman, and not got the same response. She could have been a crazy black woman, and most likely got shot. But when she acted on her impulse, she most likely wasn't thinking of her skin color. She was thinking of herself as a concerned citizen. This entire incident is not about how she misbehaved. It's about what she was told by a WH official.
some people here are arguing she should have known racism exist, right? or we should know it exists? or am i missing something? Ok, it exists. We all agree it does. what's the next step? Continue staying subdued for next 4 generations, or start voicing against it? If we are on the same page, then we are good. But some arguments here seems like they are saying one shouldn't even speak out.

And of course that idiot of a woman:
In her Medium post, Chauhan, who is of Indian heritage, characterized that response as threatening and racist.
At least they call harassment for what it is

I've always told my kids that they're as american as any other guy and not let their looks/skin color come in between. I have told them to stand their ground and not let anyone bully them.t w wrote:

Re: Such a great country that allows you to be here
It is not "expected behavior" from a senior government official. It is racist period, plain and simple. I came here of my own accord, but I don't accept racism as expected behavior. You are welcome to choose otherwise if you think that's a trade-off you need to make to earn whatever $ you do.silvermani wrote:So this is expected behavior. Then why are people "shocked" about this? We(Indians) didn't come here fleeing persecution or to get social justice. We came here of our own choice - to earn $ and there are trade offs for that. Make peace with that fact or continue to show your "outrage" and be an internet social justice warrior.Idéfix wrote:If a white woman was rude and aggressive towards him in that same setting, he would not have responded with the line about her being "allowed to be here."
