Chitrakoot (in Sanskrit meaning "picturesque abode") is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana, referring to the mountainous region where Valmiki's hermitage was located. The original Chitrakoot (with Ramayana connection and having the religious significance) lies mostly in Madhya Pradesh near the MP / UP border. Extension of Chitrakoot into UP is of a later origin (like a city expanding over time into the suburbia). It's interesting that they found the fossils of earliest-known plants in that area (Chitrakoot).

not true. it is true that Chitrakoot spans both UP and MP, but the Kamadgiri hill where Lord Rama is believed to have resided while in Chitrakoot is in UP.

Chitrakoot originally (with the Ramayana connection / narration) referred to the mountainous / forest region where Valmiki's hermitage was located (in forest / mountain area), corresponding to the Vindhya (Vindhyachal) mountain range which lies mostly in the direction / side of MP.Rashmun wrote:Seva Lamberdar wrote:Chitrakoot (in Sanskrit meaning "picturesque abode") is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana, referring to the mountainous region where Valmiki's hermitage was located. The town of Vindhyachal is in UP. Kamadgiri Hill is also in UP. Sita ki Rasoi and Hanuman Dhara are also in UP. And Tulsidas was also from UP (the plaque commemorating Tulsidas is in the UP side of Chitrakoot). It is clear that UP has a more direct association with Ramayana than MP.

It is possible that they lived on the MP side of Chitrakoot and relieved themselves on the UP side of Chitrakoot. That explains why bhaiyyas are still bimaru. Vindhyachal on the UP side is now called Mirzapur because of monomaniac infestation.Seva Lamberdar wrote:Chitrakoot originally (with the Ramayana connection / narration) referred to the mountainous / forest region where Valmiki's hermitage was located (in forest / mountain area), corresponding to the Vindhya (Vindhyachal) mountain range which lies mostly in the direction / side of MP.Rashmun wrote:Seva Lamberdar wrote:Chitrakoot (in Sanskrit meaning "picturesque abode") is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana, referring to the mountainous region where Valmiki's hermitage was located. Mirzapur is a district; Vindhyachal is a town within this district: a fine example of H-M synthesis. they are believed to have lived on the Kamadgiri hill which is on the UP side of Chitrakoot. (When you go to Chitrakoot you are supposed to do a parikrama--circumambulation--of this Kamadgiri hill since it is believed to be especially sacred, just like Govardhan hill is especially sacred in the Krishna mythology.)

UP connection with Ramayana Chitrakoot seems quite weak / flimsy. Ramayana talks about Chitrakoot in a deep forest (such as deep / vast Vindhyas in MP), rather than a single or few small hills in UP (about which people can easily circumambulate).Rashmun wrote:Vakavaka Pakapaka wrote:It is possible that they lived on the MP side of Chitrakoot and relieved themselves on the UP side of Chitrakoot.
