Chaddi Hypocrisy: UP BJP MLA at the forefront of anti-Beef protests was Founder of Halal Meat companies exporting Beef
Sangeet Singh Som, the fiery BJP MLA at the forefront of the frenzied anti-beef protests and an accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots, founded one of India’s leading halal meat export companies, according to documents available with The Hindu.
The company, Al-Dua Food Processing Private Ltd, was founded by Mr. Som, along with Moinuddin Qureshi and a third partner, to deal in meat and meat products in 2005. According to Al-Dua’s website, the company is now a “leading producer and exporter of halal meat from India.”
Mr. Som’s role in promoting the company is at variance with the BJP’s campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who during the Lok Sabha polls, called the growing meat exports the “pink revolution.” Mr. Modi and others have said that the growing meat exports were a cover for slaughter of cows.
When The Hindu confronted Mr. Som with the evidence, he flatly denied having anything to do with meat business.
“There was nothing about meat. I am a pure Hindu and would do nothing to hurt Hindu sentiment. You would be surprised to know that despite being a Thakur I don’t eat even egg and start my day with a havan,” he said.
According to the Memorandum of Association of Al-Dua Food Processing, filed on December 19, 2005, the company, which exports halal meat to Arab countries, was started “to carry on the business of (sic) manufacturers, producers, processors, buyers, sellers of and dealers in meat, meat products…”
Unsecured loans
Official documents show that in 2005-06, all three promoters of Al-Dua, one of India’s leading halal meat exporting companies Mr. Som co-founded, also advanced unsecured loans to the company. Mr. Som gave Rs. 4 lakh, Moinuddin Qureshi Rs. 7.60 lakh and Yogesh Rawat Rs. 4 lakh. The company also received unsecured loans from two other companies totalling Rs. 10 lakh.
Official filings with the Registrar of Company Affairs show that the company purchased a piece of land for Rs. 30,78,000 in 2005-06.
On March 27, 2008, Mr. Som ceased to be a director in the company. He transferred his 20,000 shares in the company to Nasira Begum at Rs. 10 a share. There is no evidence of Mr. Som receiving back the unsecured loan he gave the company, or of him charging any premium for the shares in the company.
Al-Dua was not the only business dealing between Mr. Som and Mr. Qureshi, one of India’s leading meat exporters. Mr. Som has also been involved as an additional director in Al-Anam Agro Foods Pvt. Ltd. with Mr. Qureshi.
A day after telling Hindustan Times that he was unaware of being appointed a director in the company and that his involvement was only in purchasing a plot in Aligarh for a meat processing plant, Mr. Som took a different line when The Hindu confronted him with the evidence. The BJP MLA from Sardhana constituency in Meerut, admitted that he was a director of Al-Dua for about two years because he had invested about Rs. 9 lakh in the property.
“Being one-third stakeholder of the land I was a director in Al-Dua. In fact, I only asked them to make me one of the directors. But just two years after that we sold the land to somebody so it ended my relationship with Al-Dua,” he said.
Mr. Som insisted that Al-Dua was just a piece of land when Mr. Qureshi along with Mr. Rawat, whom he kept on addressing as “Delhiwale pandit ji,” bought it.
“Apparently, Moin Qureshi didn’t have sufficient money. So he must have approached Mr. Rawat who in turn approached me. The company which was just a land then, had equal stake from all three of us. That is why I was also a director,” he said.
Sounding visibly upset over phone, Mr. Som said, “I am frankly telling you that by investing in that land, I made a mistake. I had no idea that Al-Dua had anything to do with meat.” He added, “But all this was way before I joined politics.”
Asked if he had any idea about Al-Dua and Al-Anam being associated with buffalo meat processing and export, Mr. Som said, “I am telling you not once but repeatedly that I had no idea. Al-Dua was in 2006 just a piece of land.”
He also claimed that Moin Qureshi, along with Mr. Rawat and himself, had sold the land in 2008 and since then there has been no association with Al-Dua.
The BJP leader termed all this a political conspiracy by Atul Pradhan of the Samajwadi Party who had contested against him during the 2012 Assembly polls. “When I was asking for ticket from the BJP in 2012, the party had investigated all these allegations and had rejected them because it didn’t find any merit in them,” he claimed.
“The Al-Dua Food Processing has the best processing facilities and is an established name and has a reputation for which our products are most sought after in all exotic markets. Al Dua Food Processing are specialists in the export of quality halal buffalo, sheep/lamb, goat meat and hides,” the company’s website claims.

Re: Chaddi Hypocrisy: UP BJP MLA at the forefront of anti-Beef protests was Founder of Halal Meat companies exporting Beef
When controversial BJP lawmaker Sangeet Som visited Uttar Pradesh's Dadri last week after a man was lynched there allegedly over beef rumours, he had accused Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's government of rescuing "cow killers." Condemning cow slaughter, he had also claimed that it was leading to riots in the state.
NDTV has now accessed documents that show Mr Som was associated with not just one but two meat processing and export companies.
The Registrar of Companies' documents show that Mr Som was a Director at the Al Dua Food Processing Private Limited from 2005 to 2008. On its website, Al Dua claims to be a "leading producer and exporter of halal meat from India." Documents also show that he was an Associate Director of another meat processing company, Al Anam, from February 2008 till June 2008.
Though documents show Mr Som was a Director and held 33% stakes in Al Dua between 2005 and 2008, when NDTV asked him about this yesterday, he said he had only invested in land owned by the company in 2008 and sold it within six months.
"My friend Yogesh Rawat approached me in 2008 and asked me to help buy some land for a friend of his, Moinuddin Qureshi, who was a farmer. They couldn't come up with the capital, so he needed some help. I contributed around six to seven lakh rupees in buying that land. That was my only involvement. Then within few months, I sold that land and my shares in the company."
Mr Som also claimed that he "had no idea" that Al Dua was a meat processing company. "At the time when I bought the land, it was the only asset that the company owned. A company can do thousand things. How do I know what the company did? As far as I know, the company was not doing anything," he said.
Al Anam has been registered as a food processing company since 1999, and Mohammed Kamil, a prominent meat exporter, is its Director. Mr Kamil is the owner of MK Overseas, one of the biggest meat exporters in the country.
Interestingly, it was Mohammed Kamil who bought the shares of Al Dua after Sangeet Som and two of its other owners, Yogesh Rawat and Moinuddin Qureshi, gave up their shares in 2008. Now MK Overseas owns 95% of shares in Al Dua.
Sangeet Som has been charged with making inflammatory speeches ahead of the 2013 riots in UP's Muzaffarnagar that killed more than 60 and left hundreds of thousands homeless. He is out on bail.
