Santosh Desai: The end of the road for Arvind Kejriwal
Kejriwal’s desire to make a mark nationally has left him suspended between being effective and appearing consequential. He has effectively given up the reins of Delhi, but has been unable to make an impact elsewhere. He had given up the anti-corruption platform even before Modi’s demonetisation gambit hijacked it wholesale and now has no alternative idea at a national level to challenge the ruling dispensation with. He ruthlessly jettisoned other voices in the party that could have buffered him at a time like this, and now finds himself marooned on an island called Arvind Kejriwal. He has substituted a permanent whine in the place of a compelling promise. Kejriwal communicates an air of permanent instability and a constant desire to be somewhere else doing something else more rewarding.
Is this the end of the road for AAP? That certainly seems the most likely eventual outcome. The script from here on can be read in advance-- more pressure from the Centre, more intensified and negative media coverage, cracks within the party with a significant number defecting to BJP, perhaps even outright dismissal on some ground or the other. A gradual but inexorable slide into oblivion seems inevitable. In an earlier time, one would think twice before writing off Arvind Kejriwal, for he has the unquestionable ability to surprise. The problem is, today, he has nothing left to surprise us with. The strangest things can happen in politics, and it would need something very strange to happen for AAP to find a way back from where it is today.
