** judy woodruff is such a remarkable woman. I was skimming the times and at first went into a panic - "did something happen to her? I hope she's alright."

** growing up we didn't have cable and the pbs news hour used to air at 7pm, so i'd always watch that - it was originally the macneil/Lehrer news hour until they both became very old. I became used to hearing the news reported in a calm, matter-of-fact and informative way. After they retired and by then I had left home for college,  the tradition of watching the evening news with my parents also disappeared and in college and afterwards I rarely watched TV as I did not own a television set. I was moving so often and there was so little space, I never missed it. anyhow, when I did catch the news it was almost always to hear the opinions of mark shields and david brooks. (the latter is republican, writes for the NYT, an optimistic but mostly balanced and nice fellow).  I also very much loved the McLaughlin show. it was the best. it was also dad's favorite show. I also liked tim russert, Peter Jennings, and dan rather. but really no one was as elegant as macneil and Lehrer.

** for the last two years now, I've been watching judy woodruff, and she is very under-rated. i'm so happy that the times has decided to talk about her after all these years and give her the recognition she so richly deserves. and I am so very grateful that all is well with her!
