BJP leader says Taj Mahal is 'blot on the nation because person who built it had imprisoned his own father'
Describing one of the wonders of the world–the Taj Mahal--as a ‘blot on Indian culture’ BJP MLA Sangeet Som claimed that the person who had built it had imprisoned his father.
While addressing a gathering at Sisoli village after inaugurating a statue of 8th century king Anangpal Singh Tomar the controversial MLA not only pushed the divisive agenda once but also exposed his ignorance of history by confusing Shahjehan with Aurangzeb.
He said many people are worried at the Taj Mahal being removed from the list of historical monuments in UP’s tourism department booklet. “Whose history are we talking about? The man who built the Taj imprisoned his father. He had massacred the Hindus of UP and India? If this is history it has to be changed.”...
Som, who questioned the Taj Mahal’s place in Indian history, is an accused in the Muzaffarnagar communal violence and had violated the law by making a provocative statement in Dadri after the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq in September 2015.
Answering a question on the Taj Mahal in the Lok Sabha on July 19, 2016, the then union tourism and culture minister Mahesh Sharma had revealed that the world-famous monument had earned a revenue of Rs 75 crore in three years of which only Rs 11 crore had been spent on its maintenance and other important environmental development of the Taj Mahal during the same period.

Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan never imprisoned his father; rather, it was Shah Jahan's son Aurangzeb who had imprisoned Shah Jahan. The BJP leader is ignorant of basic Indian history.

All monuments have some dark history. The Mayan pyramids used to be places of sacrifice. Men would have their head chopped off at the top of the pyramid and it would roll down the pyramid like a football, with eager onlookers grabbing it as a souvenir. Despite all that, these pyramids enjoy an exalted status as archaeological wonders. History is what it is, it cannot be changed. That MLA's logic is flawed.

So, do you think it is appropriate to put a notice in front of Taj Mahal that Aurangazeb imprisoned the guy who built (not really built, he made so many people sweat it out) the Taj Mahal, killed his own brother and put his sister under house arrest for not supporting his barbaric actions?silvermani wrote:All monuments have some dark history. History tells us that Asoka had killed a hundred of his brothers, and that he carried out a blood bath in Kalinga (modern Orissa) and yet he is remembered in India as a great king.
