Rahul criticizes the BJP's new gag law in Rajasthan
NEW DELHI: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today criticised the law proposed recently by the Rajasthan government that bars courts from taking up private complaints against public servants including ministers, lawmakers and officials without a nod from the state government.
In a tweet addressed to Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, Mr Gandhi said, "Madam Chief Minister, with all humility we are in the 21'st century. It's 2017, not 1817."
The controversial Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 is expected to come up for the state government's approval on Monday. The Congress has criticised the BJP government in the state for passing the ordinance. "Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje wants to institutionalise corruption that has been a hallmark of her regime for four years," said Sachin Pilot, Rajasthan Congress president, on Saturday. The Congress said it will raise the issue in the upcoming assembly session and force the government to withdraw the provision.
The state government said in a release on Saturday night that there was no provision in the ordinance to protect corrupt officials.
Rajasthan's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Rathore told NDTV that the law was brought in as "people were filing false cases against public servants".
