Goa minister in BJP-led govt says "Kannadigas are haramis (bastards)"
Goa Water Resources Minister Vinod Palyekar has reportedly called Kannadigas 'harami' (illegitimate or bastard).
Palyekar made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Goa, after visiting the Kalasa-Banduri Nala project site at Kanakumbi in Belagavi district on Saturday. The project aims to divert the Mahadayi river water at Kanakumbi in Khanapur taluk.
During his interaction with reporters in Goa, Palyekar said, "The Karnataka government is playing dirty politics over the Mahadayi dispute and had diverted the river water, which should flow in Goa."
To a query on why he sought security cover during his visit to the project site, Palyekar said: "Kannadiga people are 'harami' and can stoop to any level."
Though there was a Supreme Court stay on the project work, the Karnataka government had been carrying out the construction work, Palyekar stated.
Later, the minister asked journalists not to mention the abusive word. On Sunday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah termed Palyekar's statement reprehensible.
"The abusive words used against #Kannadigas by @bjp4India Irrigation Minister from Goa are reprehensible, to say the least. However, we hold no grudge against the people of Goa. We will continue to strive to secure drinking water from #Mahadayi for out people," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

What a foolish comment to make particularly since elections in Karnataka are only 2-3 months away.

"Harami" is used as an idler or no-good fellow; "haram-jada" (created or born by wrong means) is close to illegitimately-born or bastard.

Harami also means illegitimately born. The key word here is 'haram' which means illegitimate. the hindustani word for 'idler' would be an 'alasi' person (lazy person) or 'nalayak' (useless person).

the colloquial use is same (as worthless) for both "harami" (with the so called roots in Arabic 'haram' which means impure and is the antonym of 'halal') and 'alasi' (with the so called roots in Sanskrit 'aalas' which means laziness).Rashmun wrote:Seva Lamberdar wrote:"Harami" is used as an idler or no-good fellow; "haram-jada" (created or born by wrong means) is close to illegitimately-born or bastard.

Rashmun, people (including parents) in India sometimes when they are angry with their kids call them 'harami', which certainly is not a sign / name / title for their kids by them as illegitimate (or bastard) but merely as worthless (or of little use). 'Haram-jada' on the other hand is considered a cuss word / phrase implying bastard.

never heard of parents calling their children 'harami'; perhaps this usage is specific to himachal. where i come from, harami means bastard and this is also how the news media has reported it.
Goa Water Resource Minister Vinod Palyekar has reportedly abused Kannadigas terming them as 'harami' (illegitimate or bastard).

'incidentally, there is another word called 'haramkhor' which means someone who makes money illegitimately i.e. a corrupt person.
