The Purusha sukta reference to ancient occupations
The contents in the following paragraphs (inside quotes) relating to brahmin and kshatriya etc. in the Purusha sukta in Rig Veda, signifying ancient society's occupations anthropomorphically according to basic traits (characteristics) rather than the genetic origin (birth), were included in my several blogs including "Hindu Caste System & Hinduism: Vedic Vocations (Hindu Castes) Were Not Related To Heredity (Birth)" (*).
"To shed further light on Purusha Sukta in the Rig Veda (book 10: hymn 90.12), which talks about the ancient society or tribe's vocations (brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya and shudra): brahmin or priest involving oratory skills and thus signifying Purusha's mouth, kshatriya with characteristics of strength and protection which signify Purusha's arms, vaishya being the main constituent and carrier of society / tribe signifying Purusha's thighs / legs, and Shudra as the newcomer to society / tribe (on foot, Purusha's feet) engaging in helping and providing service to others.
"The reference in the above involving Purusha is not in terms of heredity of castes (brahmin etc.), but mainly as anthropomorphic symbolism on important traits of ancient occupations(e.g. oratory involving mouth in the case of brahmin, strength involving arms in the case kshatriya, bulk of society supported on legs in the case of vaishya, and the newcomers to society / tribe on foot (पद्भ्यां शूद्रो अजायत) and providing service represent shudra). Re: The Purusha sukta reference to ancient occupations
The influence of Moon with respect to humans mentally / emotionally seemed to be thought also long ago and it was recorded in the ancient Purusha Sukta (Rig Veda - book 10: hymn 90.13), indicating a close connection between Mind and Moon (viz. Moon arising from Purusha's Mind according to hymn 13 in Purusha Sukta).
