Eleven accused have been arrested in the gangrape of two girls from Betma in MP by 16 people, including the stepson of a local BJP corporator and the grandson of a Congress corporator, as well as two advocates’ sons. Five, are still absconding. The 16 even included passers-by who stopped, and instead of trying to save the girls, joined the rapists. The act was filmed and the MMS circulated in the area. All this in a state in which chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan fashions himself as the protector of the girl child and has ambitious projects like Ladli Laxmi and Beti Bachao going.

SP, DGP, Minister, and/or CM heads should roll for such a carnage. What a shame. Cases will be filed and the law will take its own course - meaning the goons will threaten, blackmail the victims/witnesses - to subvert the case.

There should be a fast track court for crimes on women and punishment more stringent.
