Re: Two Indian kids invited to White House
Why is every Indian kid forced to do MD or medical stuff ONLY? The MBA, lawyers, CPA or any other profession does not suit them. Everyone wants to become a MD. One parent even told me - it is because MDs make better money. Huh? MDs made 240K as cancer specialists but a lawyer like Preet Bharara makes much more. A Vikram Pandit makes much more too.
For some reason I am not feeling any proud at this news. Why there is only one Preet Bharara or only one Fareek Zacharia? This colleague of mine was saying that his kid went from Gr 12 to MD directly and was boasting a lot about his Tennis skills, no-TV watching and all that merits till another interrupted and said it is no surprise anyone can go from GR 12 to MD and spend 7 years in medical school followed by 3 more in residency. No MD before 28.
At least a few years ago there used to be kids in Physics, Electronics and such but now it is all spelling bees and medicine. The kids in USA are becoming similar to those in India. If in India it is madness with IITs here it is madness with MD.

I thought this is a science competition.
As for Preet Bharara and Fareed Zakaria type folks I don't know if there is any nationally publicized competition. Quite a few Indians (relative to their population) have been getting into non-science fields too like arts, law, journalism, etc, and making a name for themselves.

How about the equivalent of a Yao Ming or Jeremy Lin?

Re: Two Indian kids invited to White House
children of Indians go into medicine for the money as well as for the nobility of the profession ..where a lot of good can be done for people
only a successful lawyer makes upwards on $200.000 whereas basic salary for an MD would be $200,000 and upwards
it is the only profession that will not suffer setbacks ..at least not in a big way
because as long as there are people and their propensity to fall sick there will always be a need for doctors
in other words it is no wonder that medical profession is still the most coveted profession

well-roundedness is overrated. i'd rather have people who are preternaturally good at one thing or the other. most progress in human endeavor hasn't come from well-rounded people, but people who pushed their competitive advantage to the limit. technical smarts is our competitive advantage and we should push that unabashedly.
what i wonder about though is how these kids think up such things when they are so young. there is an advantage to youth in science and math. people in their early twenties to early thirties probably make the most astounding breakthroughs because they are at an age where they are old enough to build up the requisite technical background and young enough to come up with fresh ideas. so it never fails to astonish me that these are high school kids!

agree..I was commenting on some high strung chicken littles that like to criticize all and any achievements from their high armchairs without understanding that specialization is the name of the game these days.

Saar, please consider the following terms: average, standard deviation, distribution of income before you spew gems like MN makes 240K while Preet Bharara makes more. How many MDs can you name? (I am waiting for you to come up with Sanjay Gupta). Do you know the unemployment stats of recent law graduates? Do you know how many students who want to be a journalist end up with a column of their own (let alone a TV show)? How many of them literally have to work on peanuts (see Huffington Post) to even get noticed?
Excellence in any field takes a lot of hard work. Thanks for finding something (????) to pour cold water on their achievement.

While there are professions that can yield much much greater wealth medicine ENSURES that the kids will make good money in the 250K range. In the rest of the professions, the chances of making superior wealth is minimal.
Use my 100 data point study: If you take 100 people in each category, almost95% of the docs will make a good living with a perceived status. Wheras you can count with your fingers success stories in the other professions.
The parents force feed them bcz desis want their lives to look great for others. Hardly any doctor wants his kids to be anything else - bcz they are mostly idiots (on top of that). Others want to copy them.
Here the girl is obviously headed for Harvard or Stanford Med School (ultimately), while the other guy is likely to be a biomedical engineer.
