should they appeal to the Nawab of Arcot for help? After all, the first Nawab was a representative of the Mughals.

although i have a poor opinion of Aurangzeb, i happen to have a largely positive view of the other mughals. This letter of Shivaji to Aurangzeb is just one example of why i--like the great Maratha ruler Shivaji--admire the mughals:

I highly doubt it rashmun
Shivaji was cagey and wiley .. dont go by his letters
He is known for his strategy in getting out of a tricky situation ..many a time his quick wit and tongue saved him from being buried by the Mughals
If he admired them and least of all Aurangzeb the Marathas would be highly disappointed in calling him their leader

in that letter to Aurangzeb, Shivaji criticizes Aurangzeb for his religious policies. At the same time, Shivaji praises the religious policy of Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. Specifically, he condemns Aurangzeb for reimposing the jaziya (special tax on non-muslims) which had been abolished by Akbar.

Aurangzeb was the original Taliban following the wahabi tradition long before Mr.Wahab himself was born in Saudi Arabia
Akbar was probably tolerant with his religion having married Jodha bai ( could be to make peace with the Rajputs ) whose son was Jehangir
but i dont see how jehangir or shah jahan were nice people
.sponsor of the arts but cruel and tyrannical

in his autobiography, Jahangir writes that he would often go to the abode of the hindu sage Jadrup (i.e. he would go to Jadrup, he would not ask Jadrup to come to him) whereupon the two would discuss the 'science of Vedanta'. He writes that he would feel lighthearted after his discussions with Jadrup. I give below a famous painting of Jahangir and Jadrup:

Proof that Soudh indians are cultured and respectful than the naardh indians who like to take revenge against their oppressors.

the really bad days of the mughals began when the last mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar decided to take part in the 1857 war of independence against the British. After the British won, they made the mughals paupers.
Nawabs of Arcot, in contrast, remained loyal to the British. So the British did not touch him.
If Bahadur Shah Zafar would have declared allegiance and loyalty to the British, his descendants would have also been living in style today (like the current Nawab of Arcot).

to give a parallel Jaipur and Udaipur had a cosy deal with the Mughals which is why they were never attacked
whereas the other Maharajahs fought and were struck down along with their cities

akbar had signed peace agreements with all the rajput kings except Rana Pratap of Mewar who preferred to fight with akbar. after the deaths of akbar and rana pratap, their sons (Jahangir and amar singh) signed a peace agreement.

in medieval times there was no kingdom in the world which never fought any wars.

Re: Are we supposed to feel sorry for them?
medieval sounds uncivilized
mughals were beyond that
my question is ...did they nor accumulate more land fighting the natives
so what kind of peace agreements were these

the essential feature of the peace agreements with the rajput kings was: the rajputs would be allowed to rule over their kingdoms while accepting the overall suzerainty of the mughal emperor.
