i want to help an e-friend as i have been asked for advice. is it illegal for someone in the US to import medicines from india?

If they are prescription-only drugs in the US, it probably is illegal. It may be legally OK to bring medicines for your own consumption, but any sale of controlled medicines without compliance with prescription requirements (and any FDA requirements for import) probably violates the law.

You can send it through someone (NOT by post) 60 to 90 day supply for personal use.

But, you don't save much at all by getting meds from India. The most common generic drugs are available in US - which are all made by ranbaxy, Dr. Reddy's, etc...

i see MS. thanks for the useful info. the med. i am talking about costs $160 for a month's supply (branded) in th US. in india, the generic costs $8 for a month's supply. i doubt if generics in the US can match up to $8! anyway, i'll check.
