That is a very interesting find indeed. It points to a significant presence of Jainism in the area in antiquity. Wonder what resulted in the roll back. I have heard that Shankara et al co-opted various aspects of the religion into Hinduism to marginalize the competition. Still, there must have been a sea change and re-conversions.
Secondly, I wonder what the post-tsunami investigations revealed about poompuhar. That could really set the historical clock back in terms of civilizations in the area.

i don't think it was shankarA's efforts that spread hinduism through TN. that was the result of the bhakti movement spearheaded by the saiva nAyanmArs and the vaishnava AzhwArs. some of these folks lived through the same times as shankarA, and some others pre-dated them. sambandar for example is said to have lived in the 7th century, same as shankarA. so too thirnAvukkarasar (aka appar) who was in fact a jain and later converted to saivism because of his sister thilagavathi ammaiyAr. there are some who believe that the predominant religion in all of what is now known as thamizh nAdu was samaNam (jainism). that started changing in the 6th and 7th century due to the bhakti movement and the shift to hinduism occurred gradually over millenia. kalki writes about this in his magnum opus, ponniyin selvan.

We have to preserve these before Hindians destroy. Hindians are demolishing a 1000 year old Saivaite temple with inscriptions of Rajenra Cholan to build a highway with Hindi signs.
