the OthuvArs are a group of saivite musicians who have dedicated themselves for generations to singing bhakti poetry set to music in saivite temples across TN. some of you may recall the recent controversy between these folks and the brahmin priests (dIkshitars) at the chidambaram temple. incidentally my sympathies were entirely with this group.

i fondly recall the many hours i've spent at the kapAli temple listening to their majestic renditions of the thEvAram. impy, i'm sure you know these folks. here is a song from a new generation of OthuvArs singing gnAnasambandhar's melting thOdudaiya seviyAn in i think raga gambhira nAttai (impy?).

தோடு உடைய செவியன் விடை ஏறி ஓர் தூ வெண் மதி சூடிக்
காடு உடைய சுடலைப் பொடி பூசி என் உள்ளம் கவர் கள்வன்
ஏடு உடைய மலரான் முனை நாள் பணிந்து ஏத்த அருள் செய்த
