Don't know what chhaav here means. In Telugu, it means 'die!'. We have this recent Mahesh and Puri Jagannath's movie, Businessman where the hero actually curses the heroine to die. The goes as 'pilla chhaav, pilla chhaav, pilla chaav' which means, (you damn) girl die!

the tamil word for shadow is nizhal. is there a telugu word that's close?

this website identifies a word that may have the same origin (nIda):

shadow is different than shade.

hindi for shadow is parchhai. for shade it's chhaya/chhaav. I think chhaaya means shade too.

the closest non-indic IE cognate i could find is finnish. you can see the word written on google translate and also listen to it:

http://translate.google.com/#en|fi|shade

on the other hand finnish is not classified as an IE language but as a uralic language which is related but not from the same root. interesting. so this might be a really really old root word.
